Gas Prices

$1.25/hour can't be right...gotta look up what minimum wage was back then.
1973 was the last year the minimum wage was $1.60/hour. It increased to $2.00 in 1974.
1976/77 (in junior high), I was making minimum wage(?) as a grill cook at a Dairy Queen: $1.25 per hour x 40 hours. Took home $40.00. I don’t remember gas prices but I do remember regularly putting $.50 worth of gas in the car to be able to get to work and back. And a movie ticket was $.75.
In 1976/77 the minimum wage was $2.30.

That Chicago Tribune article is interesting, but something is not quite right...

Around 1972-73, Nixon enacted wage and price freezes, and also around that same time was the first oil embargo, and gasoline prices began to soar...not frozen, of course!

As a part-timer at Radio Schaak, we had our pay frozen, but many items continued to have price increases, as companies could get waivers on retail prices...don't know what was "essential" to the economy at RS, but they had a helluva lot of waivers!

That was the federal minimum wage (I think). States had their own minimums (see link below):

If y'all come up to Canada this summer on holiday, you might want to make sure your tank is full before you cross the border.

Regular gas here this morning is up to $2.10 CDN per liter which works out to $7.95 CDN per US gallon, or $5.80 US per US gallon. Think about it.

Not a fair comparison. You have some great comedians, great musicians, and great maple syrup. Oh, and hockey.

As of my last fill-up, brand name "Top Tier" gasoline here is $ 2.99/gallon for regular; you can find independant "no-name" fuel for $2.89/gallon or a little less if you look hard enough.

About $2.80 a gallon average around here. Saw as low as $2.59, and as high as $2.95, over the weekend.

We have one Mobil station that's unusually inexpensive, all the time, compared to others. $2.74 right now. Quiktrip less than a mile away is $2.80.

Regards,
Gordon.

I think everytime I update this thread, the price I pay is the same. It's about ¥164/L and a few dollars worth keeps my scooter going for a few weeks.

What has California got to do with it?
OPEC set the price and no single country or organization can influence it.
Arizona gets most of its gasoline from California . . . California refineries tend to produce the most expensive fuel because of that state's taxes and environmental regulations.

No one has mentioned diesel fuel prices, but $3.29/gallon at same Mobil dealer as $2.99 regular.

While that doesn't seem that high to me, rare to see any trucks a pumps (smallish 3/4 or 1 ton); maybe they are burning fuel oil...???

I stopped paying attention after giving my diesel Suburban to my daughter and SIL. But it is typically between mid grade and premium gas, closer to mid-grade, around here.
