Hi guys.

I wanted something functional but pre-loved (my wife and I are challenging ourselves to avoid buying new) and really wanted to see if I could re-purpose something if possible. Picked up three used Particleboard/MDF lockers from a Gym for next to nothing but in pretty good shape, laid two of them on their side, spent nearly all weekend changing the direction of all the hinges/fitting castors/cleaning/touching up paint/adjusting the door hinges but just managed to finish it an hour or two ago. We've just moved into a new house and I'm still unpacking all my audio finds from the last 12+ months so I just dumped the Lounge Room system components on top for the pic... and yes, the NS-1000s have stands before anyone says anything Pics below...

It's as solid (& heavy) as all hell and allows storage of LPs and accessories like the Okki Nokki etc. I wasn't given any keys for the locks however it's easy enough to get new barrels & keys for these which I plan to do mainly to use the keys as pulls to open the doors plus the ability to lock each cabinet is a bonus too

Ha, thanks Roy. Yeah, I wanted that 'New York' Vintage Industrial look but didn't want to stoop to painting numbers on myself to get it :nono: It didn't turn out as 'Índustrial-chic' as it could've but I'm no 'chic' so that's probably a good thing

Hey, you're in New York! Lucky bugger. Went there for the first time about 6 months ago... LOVED it even though the US was waaaaaay down towards the bottom of my to-do list. We only went for a wedding but can't wait to get back and see much more!

I finished my flexi rack this weekend and promptly loaded over 300lbs of gear onto it.
I have an additional full shelf in case I need to make it higher or eliminate the TT portion.
But I like it in this configuration for now.
3/4 birch ply with veneer edging and 5/8 threaded rod. It doesn't move in the least bit.

If you want to hide those long threaded rods on the Flexi you can cover them with small PVC pipe, spay painted black.

A Dremel with a cut off wheel is an easy way to cut the threaded rods to your dimensions. It's less expensive to buy the longest rods and then cut them down. A file will correct any threads that won't accept a nut.

Rubber washers or grommets between shelves lessens vibrations.

HD and Lowes carries nice chrome caps to fit over the top nuts for a more finished look.

Three legs are easier to balance than four.

3/4 MDF is the cheap way to go and HD will cut the shelves. MDF is very dense and tough to paint unless you prime it first with Elmers wood glue mixed with water. I did some Flexi-stands in satin black rolled on MDF with quarter round oak trim molding. If I do a rack that's the combo for high WAF.

Personally, I would never use a Dremel for this. That would be so painfully slow.
Straight and faster with a sharp blade on a hacksaw with a small hose clamp to guide.
I used my chop saw.

That box in front of it is full of LPs that need cleaning. Then I just have to find storage for the cassettes...

Nice stand.

You could make the tops flush by using 5/8 hex couplers on the undersides of the top shelves and countersinking 5/8-11 FHSCS through the tops into them:

Here's mine. It's almost finished. I just need to put a couple of coats of wax on it after the 3rd coat of tung oil dries. It's 44"w x 23"D x 36"H It's my first attempt at mortise and tenon construction. (Those are shadows on the end of the shelves)

You did one heck of a great job on the rack!

At my target they were by the plasticky Room Essentials college dorm stuff, a few aisles down from the pet food. They weren't by the rest of the Closetmaid/Circo/etc modular storage stuff. You probably bought a Closetmaid something or other.

The speaker stand shown here is a DIY TNT Stubby which uses the same design as the Flexi-rack and cost under $20 per pair to build. The stand consists of two MDF shelves held together by a threaded rod and a section of PVC filled with sand. I used quarter round molding to hide the MDF edges.

Thanks, the stands are Skylan stands. Another option, and ones I'm likely to switch to, and Sound Anchors.

Ok. I heard such good things regarding Skyland stands. Do you think it would be an sonic improvement to switch, or do you just like the looks of the SA's better?
