Interesting 'side shelf'.

Dresser top rack with out all-thread through the top

Hello, I have been lurking around this site for a while gathering knowledge. Thank you much! Thought I would finally submit something. I have been reading through the postings and there seemed to be a fair amount of discussion about what to do with the all-thread at the top. Thought I would share the rack I built for my eleven year old son. I Used 5/8" rod and dado cut in a piece of 1" x 1/4" Steel. I welded the nuts to the steel. I considered using threaded inserts but liked the look of the steel. I was glad I had done it that way. We quickly discovered his turntable needed a little extra suspension.

That's a very nice piece of work. Like the black against the natural wood, and the solution to the thread at the top is very attractive.

Yes, you did a beautiful job on that piece - your son must be pleased!

99% of my gear is rackmount and I'm prone to making major changes on a whim so I build everything myself. You can do wonders for less than $50 worth of wood if you have the skills and tools.

New Flexi Rack

I just finished up a Flexi Rack that has been in process for some time now. The shelves are made out of 3/4" birch with an oil finish. I used 3/4" threaded rod for the legs. I know that they are bigger than what's needed, but I preferred the look. It will replace a particle board setup purchased many years ago.

The one question that I have is there anything that would be recommended to protect the finish on the wood? Thanks!

If you are referring to these rods:

they are 5/8. In my opinion they are much better than what you can find at local hardware stores. Cost wise only $30-$40 more if you shop around, and to me it is totally worth it. Hand tighten is all that is needed, and even if you torqued it town with a wrench you will never crack the shelf.

Did you do that burnished look to the rod, nuts and washers? I like that.

When I converted this porch into a T.V. room, I made sure to include this simple built in with plenty of outlets in the back and the ability to run wires out the back and into the basement for other listening zones.

1979-1980 Sansui : GX-100 ('regular size' amp), GX-200 (larger amps), GX-300 (Big amps).

These are outstanding TT racks, in more ways than one.

Real hard to find though. Real hard. Like darn near impossible. Super Rare. Super functional, sturdy, and very 'modern art' looking. Looks like it belongs in an art museum.

Maybe one used one comes up a year on eBay but I did see 2 come up one year. Took me 6 years to find my NOS GX-100. And that was searching eBay daily. All the ones that come up were to beat up for me. One nice one came up but the seller would ship it.

Only problem is if your using a TT & amp / top and bottom shelf... only one shelve left for a regular sized tuner or/ CD player and slim tuner (if you want a tuner).

Holds a 'very large' TT no problem and a regular size amp with a little breathing room on top too, maybe 1", but... the 200 is a great size for the regular amp size... even 'more' breathing room.

I love this rack!! It was worth the wait.

In the photo below you can judge the size by looking at the regular size, same model, cassette deck.

ALL the old 'accessories', like racks, from 1964-1980 are getting harder and harder to find, IF you can find them at all. Most are darn near impossible to find now. They are just like gone forever. Folks just threw them away.

Even on eBay you can't find this 'stuff' anymore. 'Very Rarely' at best. If you do find an accessory you like, whatever it is... but it! You just won't find again for years and years, or maybe never again at all if it's special in any way.

Not that it's worth a lot of money, it usually isn't. It just that it doesn't exist anymore.

I always keep my eyes open on garbage day when driving the car... been trying to find 'shelving' for an old Pioneer rack I have (in minty shape - but there was only one shelf) that I found 15 years ago, $20. Guess everyone threw them away decades ago. Found 2 shelves, still need 2 shelves. Someday I'll find them...maybe. I mean, it's only shelves and you can't even find those, of any brand.

Ya'll got some really cool gear and racks. Clearly many have expended much effort to personalize their installation. The variety of solutions for this need is impressive.

Two separate systems here...multi-channel home theater and 2-channel music.

The gear is stacked on a repurposed coffee table. I hated this table in the middle of my living room but it works perfectly as a media table. If I were into vinyl or R2R, I'd need something taller but for CDs, DVDs, and streaming, this works well and saved the table from death by garage sale.
