Getting into video gaming

I know we have a gaming section here on the AK forums, but it's not the same as...y'know, video games ;)

I've been playing video games for as long as I can remember, earliest game I remember playing was either "Super Mario Galaxy" or "Build n' Race". Early 2010's were more my "Golden era" for video games than any other period. We've also had many game consoles over the years; Leapfrog Explorer, Leapfrog Didj, Nintendo Wii (w/Wii Fit Plus), Nintendo 3DS 25th Mario Anniversary Edition, Xbox 360 "E", Nvidia Shield K1, my brother's gaming PC, Nintendo Switch, and finally my own personal laptop (which is still fairly capable given that it's not meant for gaming). I still have most of these consoles to this day.

I don't play video games nearly as much anymore, but I am trying out some games on my new HP Laptop such as Trackmania, Minecraft, even one that I fondly remember taking turns with my brother; Zombie Assault (SAS).

Has any of your guy's children or grandchildren introduced you to video gaming? Have you found yourself gaming on the TV or arcade screen back in the 70's-90's?

I still re-play the quests of late 1980s early 1990s. Some of them have been refreshed with better graphics. I don't play modern games. Most people play online, together or against other people, and the only type of game that works in multiplayer setup is a shooter, and I hate shooters.

I've also had a long gaming background. Ya, multiplayer was me using my single phone line via modem to a friend with a single phone line. Fun times getting hooked up.
Right now, I'm playing "The Long Dark" - a survival game, located in Canadian snowy north. Kinda fun, very low key compared to all the games I use to play.
I like it - low demands on your PC, yet graphics are acceptable. it can be quite repetitive but I'm OK with that... I just want to kill time and it can be a challenge to live for more than 100 days without being killed by wolves or starving to death.
I've got a few screenshots... being the canadian north, there are occasional aurora borealis

Sorry, that image looks a bit warped, coming from my 49" wide curved monitor.
This might be better.

I've always wanted to play "The Long Dark"! Very intriguing. Just need to find the funds to afford it on Steam :D

I agree. Not a fan of shooters either. They're everywhere, and I tried Destiny 2 (which turned out to be a shooter), but it took up a lot of memory (something like 86 GB's), my laptop couldn't achieve a good framerate for FPS on low settings with native resolution, and the trackpad really chokes for fast-paced gaming. Even with something as simple as Minecraft, it would be unresponsive for a second when you tried to move around.

I need to grab myself a wireless mouse ;)

I was seriously involved in the Call of Duty/Black Ops games. Have video "friends" who I would play with all weekend. Got to be too much time (days!) playing and not moving. Decided I needed to take a break and packed away my PS4.

Never warmed up to video or computer games. I found it was too much of a time suck to be good at any of them. My grown kids have consoles they still use but I don't mess with them.

I tend to gravitate to driving games. Back in the 1999 time frame, I used to heavily play Midtown Madness on PC. Then I kind of put a lot of that away for years.

About 2018 or so I picked up an Xbox One S and installed Forza Horizon 3. I played that a lot, bought the Hot Wheels add-on, etc. Upgraded to FH4 and played that some, then I found that the Xbox sat turned off so much that every time I turned it on I had to sit through 1/2 hour of updates before I could do anything. Tried to revive interest by buying FH5, but I'll admit to only playing it maybe a total of 10 hours so far.

I'll also say that a Nintendo Switch Lite and Animal Crossing New Horizons actually held my interest for almost a year through the beginning of the pandemic. I upgraded to a full-on Switch last summer, added a couple other games but mostly find that every time I pick up the Switch the battery needs to be charged because I haven't played on it for a couple weeks. I occasionally play a round of golf on it or go into Animal Crossing and pick all the weeds that have popped up since last time.

Believe it or not, I've found Roblox to be one of the most captivating games I've played, to the point where I still go back to it as my casual time-killing game of choice even twelve years after I made my account. I've even managed to get many of my friends into it during HS!

The thing is, it really isn't a "game" itself, but rather a game engine and associated online experience with server browsers, stores, player groups, etc. You can also take advantage of the pretty solid gamemaking tools which use LUA for the programming and a separate (free) piece of Roblox software for building the rest of the game.

Since it's free, I'd recommend you try it. The paid components are truly unnecessary unless you want to get deep into game dev. Sure there's lots of plenty of negative stigma against Roblox as solely a child's game, but the capability provided by the development software and the vast array of creative game ideas really set it apart from any other game, free or otherwise. I'm sure you would be able to find plenty of free games that you'd enjoy.

I grew up with video games (I'm 56) - Pong, then text games on PC, then console games.

I finished Elden Ring a couple of months ago. The last game I finished was Kingdome Come (a medieval knight RPG). World of Tanks was the last online game I played and I grew to hate it (lol).

I played one of the first commercial video games at the pool hall hang out in our town. Can't remember the name of it right now. Just remember thinking this ain't going to replace pinball. I bought a Fairchild cartridge video game. I think they called it. Channel f. Was out about the same time as the Atari but it was a much better system. Don't know why it didn't take off like Atari did. My first computer was a DX33 and we played crusaders of the dark savant. It came on a floppy. And it just went on from there. The last game I was heavily into for computer was call of duty world at war. All the ones that came after that didn't interest me at all. We had a call of duty clan at the time and we went on to call of duty modern warfare. I played that for about a month and I said I'm done. I'm going back to call of duty world at war. To me that was still the best call of duty game. Right now I'm playing on a metaquest VR headset and my favorite game so far is a world war I flight simulator. It's really pretty amazing.

Video capture of my warrior, in Warcraft. :)

Played ... er, really, helped my young sons play ... a couple video games years 'n years ago ... DK and the one w/ the Italian plumbers (?). Didn't go at it long and even the boys soon lost interest in the stuff.

I liked Pong and Galaga, back in the day. I did play Doom 1 and 2 many many years ago. That's been it for me.
A friend repairs and restores vintage Pinball Machines. He must have 30 by now.
I enjoy playing those for a while, mostly because it's free and you can go from machine to machine. From Soho down to Brighton, I must have played 'em all.

One word-

Doom.

Changed gaming forever.

I lament the demise of the FPS that actually had the reticle centered.

...and the demise of dedicated control set flying and driving games.

...and turn based strategy games like Panzer General.

...and railroad/transportation sims.

I actually started my 28 year IT career by teaching myself how to connect more than 2 computers for co-op Doom, and in fact used that on my resume.
