Getting into video gaming

it was a much better system. Don't know why it didn't take off like Atari did.
Marketing. The road to today is littered with better products that didn't have a good enough publicity network.
I agree. Not a fan of shooters either. They're everywhere, and I tried Destiny 2 (which turned out to be a shooter), but it took up a lot of memory (something like 86 GB's), my laptop couldn't achieve a good framerate for FPS on low settings with native resolution, and the trackpad really chokes for fast-paced gaming. Even with something as simple as Minecraft, it would be unresponsive for a second when you tried to move around.

I need to grab myself a wireless mouse ;)
Destiny 1 is a much better game. I played on a PS3 though, so no help there. No idea on the PC requirements or even if the servers are still up. I need to redo the heat sink compound so it's shelved for now. Shooters with mouse and keyboard are the way to play. Mouse look means you can aim where you want immediately. Consoles or controllers you need to wait for it to skew to where you want to look.
If you want to try a good FPS, find an old copy of Unreal. Just Unreal, no tournament or whatever came after. They require other people to play. Should run great, game is 20ish years old. Pretty cheap on ebay

These guys have redone some Japanese arcade games for PS4/5, Switch, Android, Windows (no Linux:rant:), and XB1. I'm playing games from studios that had stuff that I like and was never seen outside Japanese arcades. IREM put out R-type games that are great, and H-A-H, but I've got four and In The Hunt, and had never even heard of X-Multiply, it too is really hard. Or I just really suck.

Not me, I'm not quite that good yet.

I liked Pong and Galaga, back in the day.
I have Galaga on my PS3.

Unreal was cool because you had to do stuff besides shoot people in the game- defuse bombs, reconnect communications, etc.

I believe it was also the first to have remote detonated and trip-wire explosives.

Edit- Scratch that last. Duke Nukem had remote detonated and also video monitors of other areas within the game.

Not to mention a Duke Nukem arcade game you could actually play within the game.

My list is long .... Currently, running both Red Dead Redemption 2 (Highly Recommended), absolutely the best story EVER written in any video game ever in many peoples opinions. Graphics are stunning. Dying light 2 with occasionally Tom Clancys Breakpoint (Strategic Military Shooter). I only do Co-op with friends.

As a teen I played arcade games in the local pinball parlor, fast forward to mid 40's and I started PC gaming starting with Half-Life.

Now early 60's, last game I played was Jedi: Survivor (I prefer first person and third person games.

Waiting for Stalker 2, loved the original and logged maybe over 600hrs playing it and available mods.

I played pinball for years before video games. Once video arcades came along, Galaxian and one other space game (forgot the name) were the only 2 I got good at. Years later, a neighbor gave my sons a Sega system along with a game with toy vehicles blowing each other up. My ex-wife and I bought them a Wii for Christmas 08 and later a Wii U. The older guy bought himself a PS4 in 2013. I was amazed at how good he got and how quickly! He didn't get that from me or his mom! He played this game where he had to shoot a bunch of zombies. At that time, he worked in construction and only played one hour in the evening, but you would think he did nothing else the way he mastered those games! My ex-wife, younger son and I just watched mesmerized.

@Romeo Wolf, the games forum was started for the purpose of discussing video games, but then all of the game threads that were here in GOT were moved to that forum. So, it became a game thread forum. From what I have observed, it doesn't seem like there is currently enough interest in discussing gaming to support its intended purpose, but that might change over time. You never know.

Discord two-way chatting while playing can be the best or worst thing ever. At the same time!

My son uses Discord extensively for sim racing and it's unbelievably good. Seamless voice communications in groups of a few (e.g. their team of 4 in a 24-hour race), the entire race field (100+), an interview booth (after the race for online audio/video interviews) -- and you can switch between those groups. You can exchange data, text, analytics, back and forth with individuals, or with entire groups -- and it's free. He can do driver coaching sessions via Discord and it's literally better than in-person because you can share data, even voice audio is easier to hear over Discord than talking over engine noise when you are in the room.

I have no reason to use it, but it's amazing technology. If you think of kids lost in video games, that's often true, but with Discord they are talking to each other and communicating all the time. I'd invest if it was a public company, but it is currently privately held.

I’ve got an xbox one and modern games just leave me kind of flat.

Seems to take forever to load up and I want game play, not multiple mini movies. No interest in “online play”. Tried that with Forza a couple times and it just seemed like a bunch of a-holes that just want to crash into you. Seen a couple friends get into the online play and they just started disappearing from their families lives. Sucked them right into a virtual world and they started neglecting the real one. Just doesn’t seem like a good trade to me.

Last game I played all the way through was the last Tomb Raider, but I also started that franchise on a 486…lol!

I do enjoy the Forza series with a racing chair/wheel/pedals/shifter. But only “offline”. Thats about it for the xbox these days. It ends up just being a media player most of the time.

I’m actually going backwards with any game play.

Started replaying The Adventures of Link: Zelda II (gold cart):

on my original NES:

and a little orginal “Mario Bros“ from time to time. Mmmmm….’shrooms!

Mostly “Earthworm Jim” on my original 16 bit Sega Genesis:

Still have a pile of games for both. They start up immediately and its all game play, no frills. Toss in the game genie and do whatever I want in the NES/Sega games.

Sure, its all “2D” stuff, but its just enjoyable as anything new. In some ways: more. No muss, no fuss and no 10 different buttons and joysticks to get confused. Guess I just don’t have enough RAM…,;)

Before that I was part of the crowd who used to ditch school and pump quarters into the machines at the local arcades. Great fun, but I paid a high price (education wise) for it. I got “back on the horse“ in time, but it wasn’t easy.

Heck, I’m even playing “electronic quarterback” these days:

LED goodness! Simpler times….

Not for everyone, but “retro games” are fun too. More so when played on the original consoles, which I’ve kept all these years.

Modern gaming just seems to suck people in and thats not for me, not anymore.

Now, where can I get a nice, big CRT television so I can play “duck hunt”?

;)
