Getting into video gaming

I have no reason to use it, but it's amazing technology. If you think of kids lost in video games, that's often true, but with Discord they are talking to each other and communicating all the time. I'd invest if it was a public company, but it is currently privately held.
It sure beats typing while trying not to get "one-shotted" by the boss. :)

Started replaying Link: Legend of Zelda (gold cart) on my original NES.
I recorded the 20-minute ending credits when I finally finished "Ocarina of Time" on the N64. Nintendo posted winners on their website for a time. Man, there were a LOT of people involved in the making of that game.

We have the gold cartridge, too. It's around here somewhere.

Got the name wrong and corrected it.

I’m playing “The adventures of Link: Zelda II”:

“Metalized” gold color cart….shiny. I like shiny….:)

Back in the day, Ventrilo was the app to use. Voice quality is stand alone best there is, even to this day. However, at one time they used to be free up to (X) amount of people, then they went pretty much exclusively to a paid subscription. That said, Team Speak and subsequently Discord came along whereby Discord took the rains and led the pack. Their features are unchallenged and voice quality is very good.

MY ISSUE, in public Discord channels and games as it were, is that I don't want to be on or play games with 11 year olds with smart mouths dominating conversations, and toit .... 20 something year olds ACTING like 11 year olds. Done with that business in spades.

In the early days, and I was mid late 40's, there were clans for games like the original Metal of Honor and Battlefield. I was an admin on a clan called MSC at the time and very well known. You could only join by invite and only after a grace period to make sure you fit. The clan was mostly made up of professional's in industry. We had some Doctors, Engineers and business managers. Including a Web site. We didn't accept children or childish behavure. We played for the fun, sport and sportsmanship. Those were the days my friend. Those were the days.

In the Ventilio days, our guild did dungeon runs with only two or three people able to talk. Everyone just listened. That way you don't have 40 people yelling at each other "it's all the Healers' fault!" or "Don't you know how to play your toon!"

Such angst, for a stupid video game. :)

Any non-single player gaming I do, I do with the wife. Problem solved.
Satisfactory is an amazing game to play cooperatively with someone with whom you get along. I think we put like 200 hours into that thing.

Being in the same room helps a whole bunch. Non-verbal communication. Like both hands flinging wildly in the air.

Been playing since the original NES. I currently own

Sega Genesis
Nintendo N64
Sega Dreamcast
OG Xbox
Nintendo Wii (modded with snes and genesis games installed on it)
Xbox 360
Ps4 (got it used for real cheap)
Nintendo switch (was a gift)

The game that I sunk the most hours into is probably Hydro Thunder Hurricane on the 360.

After having the Ps4 I decided I will not buy any new consoles. Its becoming download only for games and even single player games require an internet connection to play, so essentially its "you won't really own it and when we decide to stop supporting the game you can't play it". Next there is no way to resell a game after im done with it when its download only so screw it I said.

As a PC gamer I have been downloading games exclusively for almost 20 years now and haven't lost access to any in my catalog as far as I'm aware. Though I don't do live service kind of games.
It's true I can't resell any of them, but I typically buy them on Steam sales at vastly reduced price compared to their console counterparts anyway, so it's likely a wash. Not sure how the sales situation is on console online stores.

Do you have all the Switch games on cards? My son downloads all his games. No problem.

Nintendo now has a "Virtual Game Card" that allows you to transfer all game data (including player stats) from one Switch to another without needing a game card.

Yeah if I continue in gaming it will be the PC route but I will probably just not worry about it. I don't like online gaming all that much (not really into shooters or the like). I would rather play side by side with someone in the same room, that is more fun to me but games are going to no split screen play also.

I'm not embarrassed to state that video games are a non-trivial part of my marriage. As an IT guy I look for any opportunity to build/upgrade a PC,, so my wife and I have our own PCs and often play cooperative games together even when no split screen is available, like the aforementioned Satisfactory.
But yes, I do have myriad core memories of playing split screen games with childhood friends and siblings on consoles of yore but it seems that construct is a thing of the past, replaced by online gaming. A sign of the times methinks.

In the early years of Doom, I got the opportunity to meet John Carmack of ID software who personally handed me the 4 or 5? 3.5 discs from a file cabinet in the small lobby of the small offices where they started and were in the process of moving to the top floors of a large all black glass building several storys in Mesquite Tx. Across the hall from their first office were the Duke Nukem team. I got a tour of the ID Software dev teams work space by Kevin Cloud. Was a pretty cool thing back in that day.

At that time, where I worked, the guys in IT and I all held up in our offices after hours playing doom using the inter office phones intercom system, along with the network systems. We were pioneers in those days. LOL To do that back then outside the office network, playing Co-op, you might recall the old modems where you had to put your reciever on the modem and listen to the series of tones while the modems talked to one another. Member those days?

like many here, I am just the right age, early 60's

started playing pinball. Started playing the earliest arcade "computer games" tank commander, asteroids, centipede, robotron, etc. etc.
Built my first PC in HS. Played a txt-ish game called Taipan. Got an apple fat Mac in college...only apple I ever owned. Had a few games

Continued building my own pc's, gamed ALOT. Wolfenstein, Doom, quake, etc. LOVED IT. I also networked Doom at work. Was very proud of myself

I have continuously gamed since then. Early steam client. I also have a 20 year old son who ALSO games alot, so that keeps me invested a bit

The game I have played the most BY A MILE is Age of Empires 2. I played some today. I will play it until I die. I hope it helps to keep my brain semi functional.

We were gamers going up , and I still remember play "pong" on the magnavox council. That's close to 60 years ago! I have a couple early video game system in my garage I should bring in a play but the last time I did, it didn't really float my boat. I've been playing my second 2nd game of Fallout 4 for a couple of months now, and have gone different route than the first time through and just as fun as the original experience. Just can't get enough of blasting super mutants and raiders. Fallout 3 was great fun too, but not as much fun the second time thru for me. I bought a xbox one x a couple of years ago for my wife and I to enjoy but she flew the coup. I have a ps3 also and was enjoying the best golf game ever Tiger woods 14 when my hard drive gave out, i've stalled ordering a new one but not for long. Too many irons in the fire right now. I'll to download fallout one and two and will eventually play them too . Got to love video games. The first computer video game I played was on the college computer station at hvcc. I think we only had 7 terminals for the entire college back in 1976. If it had been more engaging I may have change curriculums and taken more than one course in computer programming. Such is life. john
