Getting older - Did your music taste change? I think mine is starting to. why?

Audio is my life, I do not watch TV, at all for that matter. I listen to music all day long, at work, at home, and on the weekends i stay up till 2-3am drinking bourbon and beer posting over in the music forums.

Oddly enough, I do love projectors, I have a number of them that i use to tinker with. They are older tho, EICI, Proxima, Stuff like that. I use to build LED upgrade kits for older halogen type unites. I have an INFOCUS or NEC at home that i hooked up at Christmas to watch Christmas DVD's that said i don't use sound... Play music over it.
I get that. For me, I’ve found that if I have time without music, I enjoy it much more when I indulge. It becomes a treat, instead of a constant snack. I used to have music on all the time, too- I even had to fall asleep to it. Something shifted, I got burned out and when I came back, I found that I didn’t want filler, constant sound. I mostly wanted to hear music on occasions that I could really listen and give it my attention. I limited casual listening mainly to the 1-1/2 to 2 hours I spent driving, when I’d audition new music or play stuff my partner isn’t fond of, notably metal.

Cool story and sounds like quite the show with lots of eccentrics. Last summer I picked up a decent sized cd collection and the former owner was a certified "Zappa head". I'm just getting to some of that now. Yesterday I suffered though a half a cd of vol.1 "you can't do that on stage" before I had enough of that whimsical cd.

There's also a few cd's of Jon Luke Ponty and I'm looking forward to listening to him now as he's another artist that I've never listened to. There's a lot of Eric Johnson and Steve Vai in the collection and non of those will be making it into my cd collection. If memory serves correct I believe Vai played with Zappa.
Zappa had some really good musicians playing with him. The Ponty albums that he's playing electric violin are pretty good. You really have to know what Zappa albums to get. Some are unlistenable for me. One of the best guitar work I ever heard from Zappa was a.tape of him just doodling along. It lasted foe over an hour wbile.people were getting seated. I never noticed it being played in a loop either. I woukd have loved to have a copy of it.

I'm still uncovering new music and artists all the time. I jump around in different genres and time frames frequently. When I hit a dry spell or just need a change of pace I fall back onto:

1) to my collection of novelty, comedy, stand up, and spoken word recordings.

2) From my avatar you can guess that I love electronica. When I really need a deep deep audio cleaning I have an enormous collection of samples taken from all the great synths and drum machines from last 50 years. I pop those 10000ish samples and loops into my player and hit random. It's heaven

. . . I have an INFOCUS or NEC at home that i hooked up at Christmas to watch Christmas DVD's that said i don't use sound... Play music over it.
Most of the Christmas DVD's I own are the children-oriented type that contain their own great music, like Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol--I wouldn't want to play anything over the top of that!

lol I have a “small” Christmas music collection, I’ve been poked at in the music threads for playing Christmas music I July. I love Christmas music, have you ever listened to the Judds Christmas? It’s fantastic!

To the DVDs most of what I have is classic stuff line home alone and Christmas story, holiday inn ect. :)

As you get older, you may naturally expand your musical tastes & knowledge into 'other genres'.

I went from Nat King Cole & Hawaiian music, to '60s rock and Brazilian, to '70s rock, to '70s rock and got heavily into '50s/'60s Jazz, then very early Jazz, to some '80s rock and some International POP, some Motown, some USA Disco, Michael Jackson, to punk, to grunge, progressive rock, back to rock and early Jazz, to foreign traditional: Thailand, Japan, digeridoo, to The Delta Blues, South America (Latin), Soweto, Samauri, Electronic, to Spanish guitar, Flamenco, Samba, Reggie, to USA traditional-folk & Bluegrass, some very specific USA and Brazilian women singers, to 'early' Country, & finally back to 70s rock albums I've never heard before. Also, lately, I've been getting into traditional American Indian especially true/real Indian 'war' music - all played by real Indian musicians using instruments of the period.

I'm sure I missed a few. Korean Pop - in Korea, before it was fashionable, Chinese rock (one 'heavy' band), Cuban, International Disco, Peruvian Flute music, Cajun, some traditional Indian Sitar music from India all played by 'the greats' (found 20 CDs at a garage sale - he said just keep them for free and enjoy! (I ended up giving most of them to an Indian store we have close by - kept 7 or so). Also picked up a lot of ODDs and ENDs stuff 'crate digging', all M- LPs & CD - some of it was really good!! The rest I just donated back to GW.

I didn't plan it that way - that's just the way it all worked out.

It's all BIG FUN. :D

I've always had a broad range in my musical preferences from baroque to nirvana and everything in between.
That said, when I was a young teen my Grandfather, who loved opera, told me that when I got older I would learn to appreciate it.
Well, I'm turning 77 on Saturday and I'm still waiting. :p :p :p
I was a big enough Bela Bartok fan to buy his relatively short, one-act opera, Bluebeard's Castle, and I actually liked it enough to play it once every five or six years. The version I had is on YouTube:

Edit: For some reason, the YouTube link I posted earlier went to "media unavailable." I listened to it before posting, and I've just now started it up again in YouTube. Oh well, I think the album I had was

Béla Bartók - Hungarian State Opera Orchestra - János Ferencsik – A Kékszakállú Herceg Vára (Bluebeards Castle)
with Evgeny Nesterenko and Elena Obraztsova
Hungaroton – SLPD 12254

I still like what I listened to in the 80's, 90's and some 2000's. Over the years I even liked some new artists I heard on the radio, but I just don't listen to modern stuff on the radio anymore just a couple oldies channel on FM while in the car and YouTube when I am on the computer.

Also, I dove a little deeper into some bands I missed back in the day (TheFixx as an example) plus started hunting down 70's hits I remember hearing. Listening to Billboard top 100's from each year digs up some hits I had forgotten.

New music doesn't have real drums, exotic instruments, guitar solos, real vocals not autotuned to death. Bands have died and we just have vocalists who don't play instruments except for a few artists like Ed Sheran. I could tell The Police from Red hot Chilli Peppers or Metallica with just a few notes, they were just that different.

Well, without going into details there are certainly some particular groups I won't listen to anymore and wonder why I did then.
But all in all my music taste hasn't changed, still like most genre's of music....................but, there are at least two if not more that I may have forgotten for good reason that I don't consider music and again, not to alienate anyone I won't go into details. ;)

Grover Washington Jr. is generally non-descript and relaxing (to me).
David Sandborn is along the same vein.

Doesn’t take much effort to listen, good background music.
Not for serious listening, though (again, for me).

Well good post but I am not in a situation where i dont have a good life and dont have other hobbies i love and still partake in. I say music is my life because i do not have a TV and I truly listen to music from sun up to sun down. I collect gear as a hobby as well, have a good 50-60 tube amps, 10-12 turntables, speakers, CD Players, I build custom cables for fun. I enjoy shotting vintage pellet guns from the 50s and 60s, I restore them to new. I am a commercial locksmith by trade and have a whole shop full of great tools. My life is great in that aspect, but Music lately has been dual to me. Just trying to figure out why and if this has happened to any other music lovers. :) I do see your point, and i agree. That is why i went for a bike ride yesterday and did some house work just to have a change of pace.
There is nothing there I disagree with. In fact, there is much similarity to our experiences. I'll throw out another nuance: Ever since I got "good" at being a bass player and lead vocalist, it's difficult for me to listen to ANY pop music from a perspective of, "I wonder if we could pull that song off." In fact, I really can avoid that perspective if it's stuff we'd never even try. i.e. classical and horn bands. But even if it's female fronted, I sometimes go there because I've gotten some women in our area to collaborate with us on some songs at our shows.

Bottom line is that it's less easy to enjoy songs when you are subconciously "auditioning" them. But much better when I can just listen and enjoy.

One caveat: I do a lot of work in my shop and in the woods where I INTENTIONALLY turn off the music because I can sometimes bask in the silence of being in my own head. And it's not really silent at all...

Hi All,

Maybe an odd question but it’s just something that i have been experiencing lately. Not sure if it's stress or if I've just played through my music that its not enjoyable. New music has interested me less lately, the music i use to love has slowly started to be overwhelming to me.

Big fan of 90's rock and alternative, classic rock, jazz, soft rock, classic rock, some 90's hip hop.

I had Good Charlotte spinning yesterday and it just felt like to much was going on, I switched it up to Matchbox 20 and liked it more, but i've noticed lately its hard for me to sit through an entire album. I paly spotify all day and its just been blah. Feels like i lost my music loving mojo....

IKD maybe im just overthinking it but some music lately has just not hit the spot. Its like i want to spin a good album, I dig and dig and cant find anything i want to listen to, switch to CD and its the same, same with cassette, the format or genera dose not seem to matter, I just feel fatigued, and not sure what it is. Either way, any of you ever experience this?
Mine has remained the same for the most part since I was like 16 and I am now 65. There are a few bands that i do not listen to anymore but i never grew out of the classics. the 70s will always be my favorite decade for music.

Bluesky, That's a good road map! I'll pick a few out of there to play on my Sansui 9090. :- )
