Going Digital!

Good ears Ben,

You were able to pick up on said effects from the low tech microphone, and still were able to understand what I meant about the speakers actual sound, like you I'm aware that there are many flavors of the rainbow, and not everyone is going to select the same one which makes life that much more interesting as diversity is the key to having these options.

I can hear what some misunderstand about many of the Monitor Audio Speaker designs as well - most have only taken time to hear the earlier versions from let's say 1987 - 1995 and formed a negative opinion of them based upon their use of metal dome tweeters being overly extended, when in fact if they like many designs were placed behind a system with tubes in it, more often then not it would tame said sense of brightness and offer a more rounder presentation while filling in the midband and offering more weight.

As per your Sylvania 6SN7s in your Rogue 99, if we're talking NOS Black Plated versions?, they are one of the most refined ones every made, along with the Brimar or Tung-Sol Black Glass versions, but your mistake is that one should never rely upon the same brand/sonics of any given tube used more then once within their systems other then power tubes - in your case if you wanted to add more presence or snap to the lower treble to upper midrange areas to have greater attack?, then adding two Russian Foton Factory ( don't laugh as one has to take into account that the Russians never stopped making or using tubes, and that some factories had better sound then others ) as shown here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MATCHED-PAI...977?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ce2054921

Who knows......, you might be surprised by the overall results. It's the little details that count.

Now back to a word from our sponsor.

Thanks for the reply Oscar. I think they're the black plated version (they may be chrome tops too). I got them from audiotubes.com The first set I got originally came from Baldwin organs but they were terribly microphonic so I called the phone number & got to talk to the guy who runs the place (actually an audio engineer IIRC). He advised me to go up the food chain a little & the new set he sent weren't microphonic at all. They've become a little so over the intervening months but you have to expect that with tubes. The ones in the link you included are priced so low that it's easily worth taking a chance on them. I'll probably go ahead & order a pair. The Rogue uses 2 pairs but I'll put them in what I think is the position that most affects tonality & see what we get. It will take a couple weeks for them to get here, put in place & listened to so it will be awhile before I have anything to report on that particular front. Thanks again.

Good evening Ben,

As always, I'm sorry for the late response, as I sometimes get in those moods where when I'm watching movies I tend to cut te devices off, but said Russian tubes from this factory along with Voskhod were renowned for producing tubes with higher resolution then a few others, which is why I'm recommended them, and taking into account most current tube designs are actually created as well as voiced around them or Chinese tubes, you'll see it might prove worthwhile.

Once again, it's finding the right combinations of tubes that enhanced the sound, lest your equipment begins to lean to much towards one direction or the other - when in fact it's said combination which creates a more balanced presentation when done correctly - if one brand is in the slightly warmer/richer/darker side of the musical spectrum, then the other pair/trio/quad should lean towards the more neutral side to offset said balance, but as always it's subjective, but cheap enough as you've noticed to give it a try.

And as always, your welcome.

:music:_oh Yeah!.

Wow......., this has been a wonderful journey for me, but things are drawing to an end as once again I feel that I've reached my destination, because knowingly we should each know within our minds and hearts when our systems have evolved to that point were very little else can be done within reasonable pricing I should add - while a friend had mentioned to me several years ago after coming by to listen to my latest toys - " Oscar your systems sounds extremely nice, you'd be crazy to change anything ", and guess what I had came to the same conclusion 6 months prior, as I knew that I had taken all of 5 years to exchange parts here and there, mostly cabling looms and speakers and isolation devices/platforms as well as room acoustic treatment and was very content with the end results.........., until the iFi Audio Micro iDSD DAC and iUSB Power entered my life I was searching for some sort of Source that would allow me to enjoy music in much the same manner I had with LPs before my affliction with Gout settling around my left knee had caused me so much pain it was difficult for me to walk over to the table to cue up a single LP not along multiples trips back and forth.

Yet, I'm certain enough to say that while I'm well aware their are more expensive computer audio server and DACs to be had, I ask myself at what expense?, when in reality how these designs are so well voiced and/or have their technology implemented one would have to spend in my mind at least $2.400 to better what I've grown accustomed to over the last two months - but I've to stress once again, the importance of using properly designed/voiced cables to bring out the very best balance with these devices as a means on knowing it's more then capable enough of making your mind/heart shout stop searching for the illusion of the Abso!ute Sound, and allow your senses to simply enjoy the musical purity as rendered through these devices and chill.

While I've been one of those guys whom has taken full advantage of the borrowing policies as offered through the Cable Company since 2003, and trust me, I've borrowed/heard many cabling looms ranging from a mere $1.200 ( including ICs - Power Cords and LS Cables ) upwards of $6.700 ( Siltech Cables and Jorma Designs ) it wasn't the costlier cables that win me over, but surprisingly the cheapest range from Cable Research Labs in their Bronze Series along with a single Triode Wire Labs Power 10+ AC Cord used between two different tube based Integrated's that caused my ears/senses and body to stand at attention as well as be drawn into what I hear as a very matured type of presentation that some cable manufactures might take years and years to develop - but here I'm living with cables that replaced my Siltech Cabling loom that consisted of their all Copper range called Explorer Series IC - LS Cable and AC Cord from the 90 L series as it's known.

But I didn't stop there.........., as I can admit before all as well as the Creator, I'm clueless on this whole computer audio thingy, hence why I've even been able to decide which Audio Software to go with, or even how to install it and get things up and running or converting my songs over to DSD 128 that Byron gets on me about because in hindsight I've been an Analogue guys since 1966, and haven't ventured out towards digital stuff to know how to use it, I even have a Nikon 1 J2 sitting near our bed since last May that hasn't made it out of the box because I was so used to using their 35mm cameras for years. So bear with me Byron/guys........., I'll get around to learning it in due time, but for now..........., let me finish ( yeah right ) with a few cables both USB and IC that I truthfully believe should be heard.

( 1 )

USB Cables.

I've sampled a total of 9 of these over the course of said 2 months, and while I enjoyed the combination of the Wireworld Starlight 7 and Black Cat Cable Silverstar in tandem, it wasn't until by chance I spotted mention of USB Cables from an Italian company called Neutral Cable that my mind went " what if? " and as an avid researcher type I Googled and Translated everything I'd could find on their wares, and glad I did............, because upon receiving the cheapest model just called " USB " ( $135/0.8m Silver plated Copper ) along with their model called " USB Passion " ( $260/1.2M Copper ) it made me realize what said Starlight 7 wasn't doing correctly, it's like that old saying about layer upon layer unraveling before my eyes/ears in such a manner that I knew there wasn't any going back.

And I'm referring to both of these cables heard along side the AQ Diamond - Acoustic Revive 1.0LPS - Stereolab 808 Digital - Nordost Heimdall 2 - Synergistic Research Active USB SE and WW Silver and Platinum Starlights which all came across as forced and unnaturally pushed up in their upper frequencies as if to spotlight detail, yet lacked what I hear as texture - clarity and better integration of notes and an even more open soundstage and top end that seems to release the notes more rapidly if you can envision said effects.

I'm talking affordable USBs that are beating the big boys of the cabling industry at their on game, and I'm not finished here........., a friend of mine from Korea was nice enough to send me another affordable USB Cable made in England from the new firm of the guy that started Roksan Acoustics ( Xerxes anyone? ) called Vertere Acoustics which offers one of the most elegant looking tables ( costly tho ) that I've seen since the original J.A. Michell GyroDec MK III or Oracle Delphi MK IV, anyways this little Silver plated Copper cable goes by the model Pulse D-Fi V2 ( $157/1m ).

Byron/guys................., call me crazy or worse, but if nothing else " I can still hear " and these cables are once again worthy of being on anyone's short-short list while saving say between $550 - $1.050 for said Light-harmonic Lightspeed - but as always, it's subjective and depends upon if one has actually taken the time to compare other cables to another in their own systems?, or did you just settle?.

So my recommended USBs are then - Black Cat Cable Silverstar - Neutral Cable USB and USB Passion and Vertere Acoustics Pulse D-Fi V2.

( 2 )

Interconnects.

Onwards to what I hear as a very very very very very beautiful sounding IC with a sense of correctness about it, it's down right scary.............., while not as cheap as the USB Cables mentioned above - it has made my to buy list in June once other items in my system are put into place - like another set of Synergistic Research HFTs and ECTs, along with the Atomic Audio Labs Mac Platform ( remember my wife and I are both living in disability - no jokes ) so I'm more inclined to spend say upwards of $500 - $700 max per month on said toys, as I'm always more concerned with luxuries like shelter and food more - but said IC is question is the ZenWave Audio D3 ( Silver/Gold Neotech Alloy $475 promo, or $680/1m afterwards ) and compare to what I've heard while sampling ICs upwards of once again $2.700 from the Cable Company ( CRL Silver ICs by the way ) and while I'll always have CRL Cables in my system, a few ICs have given me reason to once again look within and say

" What If? ".

So there you've it, cables which I truthfully will enhance your listening pleasure of said iDSD/iUSB Power even more, as it's always about balance, and balance and correctness of tonality and pitch are the basic requirements in obtaining a truer sense of Synergy, I tend to go after components capable of presenting detail - snap and attack - nimbleness/agility - resolution and transparency - beauty of notes - true to pitch/timbre/tonality as well as organic in nature, unless I'm mistaken............, these are qualities that all of us should be striving towards, right?.

Until my next long-winged episode has been approved by the powers that be.........., up next 2 different USBs from CRL due on Wednesday.

From De' Long - Winded 1One.

Salaam.

Hi Tim,

Trust me, I figured out exactly why we both got along since our days at PFM, it's because we're both capable of writing books in one evening and more importantly, because we are more like minded then not on topics of audio - life and that rarest human factor called caring/sharing about/with others.

Thanks for the kind words as always, as the mean the world to me.

And, I'm not quite done yet............, so by all means, stay tuned.

Be good Bro, and that goes out to your loved ones as well.

Sounds like you've found great cables to go with your iFI products! Great! I can't stress enough how great iFi Micro DSD DAC's are. IF a person has a good enough amp and speakers, he should be able to enjoy it for years to come. And you've made it easy for some who are serious about sound quality. To that we all say thank you.

So if any one wants and needs new cables, or simply want to experiment with seeing what these products bring to the table....im not talking about just any old cables, but something that can make a differnce, here's your chance. Once I get a few other things settled, I might just take you up on the offer of the Neutral cables....see what all the fuss is about! Yes sir! I do believe im set with my Wire World Silver Eclipse 7, that thing is a very nice RCA in its own right, but you've talked up that Neutral cable and I must admit, its peaked my interest to the point I wouldn't mind trying it out. But I do think when trying out cables, a great sound can be system dependent:yes:. What works over here wont work over there all the time. But im willing to try that neutral cable, but all in due time.

Hey Oscar, don't worry about the long - winded thang - I always enjoy reading your posts in their entirety. A lot of good info to be had by doing so. I'm already Googling the products in your latest post.

Ok...after running the new Wireworld cables in for about a week, they are returning back to the place the other cables where. As you know I had to give the demos back as my new ones came in. I tell Ya...running in cables can sometimes be a pain. Yes they where good out of box, but still, you want fully run in On cables. All the cables are silver over copper. The least silver is on the usb from the machine to the PSU. The next amount is from the PSU to the DAC, and the most and finest Silver (Crystal silver over Crystal Copper) is from the DAC to the preamp and these are RCA's. The reason I decided to go from least to most at the source is because one can easily have to much of a good thing with silver to where it's not natural sounding at all. The goal is natural sounding as possible. What I'm hearing is a well balance and well proportioned sound. Tembre and tone are on point. Nothing hitting me up front and nothing to far from me. I'd say I have a nice front row seat as the staging is spread wide and deep. I sit ten feet away from speakers and speakers are 10 feet apart from each other and facing forward with no toe in. Power amp, preamp, and Micro each are resting on floor on their own maple wood blocks. Machine is on audio rack alone with TT. what I'm hearing is nothing short of outstanding....its all various files upsamples to DSD128 on the fly unless already DSD128. Music presents it self in layers. It's all detached from speakers and sorts of floats. the benefit of having speakers faced forward is so the stage can be spread out and wide. You can actually hear as if every musician is as if they are on a stage in differnt spots If this effect was manipulated while recording. Speakers must have a wide dispersion for this to be at its best.

The remarkable thing about the Micro is its powerful sound. It's ability to be tonally accurate while having such a 3D presence. There's lots of technology locked in that small box..all it takes is the right synergy with the right combination of USB and RCA cables to have it all clicking! I've found that synergy with cables, and it's all clicking.....Wire World cables. Of course, less any one is mislead....cables can be very system Decendant. What clicking over here may not click over there, so that's why one must hunt down what's right for them.

These cables have no false sense of air as to polish the sound more than what they are...and nothing bright nor a false sense of boominess. It's all natural sounding with a neutral flavor. This is the beauty of a great cable and what it can do. The good copper in the cable lets one have natural sounding rich tones...nothing faded or colored to deeply, but the right shade of tonality to each instrument. You know you're hearing a sax, a piano, and snare drum and snare rim shots. You know a wood double bass from an electric bass, and you know a fine tuned guitar. Peeks and vallys in classical music is rich, loud and silent...it's all there....it's clicking like a mug! Dosent matter what type of music, a system...speakers done right aught to play every type of music no matter what and the music be detached from the speakers. It should flow effortlessly and give it too you in layers. As Im listening to Joe Hendersons "Isotope" off his "Inner Urge" recording, it's hard to believe all this is being anitialted by the little iFI Micro DSD DAC! There is nothing missing in way of performance... It does music right, much better than my CDP at three times the cost. It's surly more transparent to the point you can see deeper into the music, and hear more of it as well as! As great as the Micro and USB are...One must compliment it with a set of very nice cables to make her complete and enjoy her forever!
If any one is considering a DAC...you can't go wrong with the little Micro!

Hey Brotha B,

I'm late to the party as always, but I've to say that cables are very much system dependent which is why I recommend the services of the Cable Company to begin with, yet there are rare occasions where if a person system is geared towards neutrality as well as transparency, then more often then not one can generalize what should work, or should not based upon what one is looking to achieve sound wise - case in point..........., one shouldn't add Nordost Cable onto say anything Rotel that I'm aware of, unless of course the designers have changed the sonics of their gear since I last heard it back in 2009, when I found it more on the analytical side I had to leave the room within 30 seconds as if it was causing my eyes and ears to bleed, but as always........., some might see/hear this sort of presentation as detailed?.

But as you more then anyone here, unlike the ones whom have actually heard my system should recall........., I'm batting 5 out of 5 with you on things I've recommeded in the past - so I ask thee once again to trust them on those Neutral Cable USBs, Byron as you might recall?, I'm generally located on the floor dead center next to my rack to to those moments when immobility hits me - but as my doctor pays house calls, as he was taking my blood pressure earlier while I was sitting on the sofa which I haven't done in almost three years, it was my first time hearing the system from this location, and man oh man is it " clicking ", the weird thing is my doctor wanted to hear it again since he said he was some taken with it the month before that he had mentioned what he had heard to his wife and co-workers and was trusting enough to ask me to assist him in putting a system together..............., now that's what I call earned street creditability if I've ever heard it. Bragging rights intact I might add.

And know that, I'd never try intentionally to steer an enemy wrong, not alone a friend whom I'd much rather see get things right, as opposed to chasing their tails endlessly, that's not my way, I either speak " truths " or I don't have **** to say.........., but you know that, lies for me are like living up to bad Karma, and I need all the blessings I can get.

Those USBs from this unknown in the states little Italian company have me smiling ear to ear, which is quite hard for someone like myself to even care to admit, being that I was once this overly serious type whom people generally backed away from when I came their way, as they would say after they got to know me better " Dude, you scared the **** outta me, you have a look on your face as if you would kill me without thinking about it ", but as we sometimes know, looks are deceiving - I'm one of the nicest people in the world, but only with ones I don't feel are stereotyping, as homey don't play that race card **** very well.

And please forgive the few cuss words, it's part of the package as well as who I am from time to time, so please except the real me, as that's all I can be.........., real that is.

Until my next chapter is completed then.........., be thee well little Brotha.

O_oh.

Hey Ben,

Man as always, thanks for being so understanding of the fact there are times where I can be overly expressive, but my intentions are merely to share said findings as they might prove worthwhile to others whom just might enjoy venturing out to things/companies unknown?.

But in reality............, I'm a talker, always have been, especially when there's so much to share and has to be said. And once again there are times when some of us are speaking the truth and hear nice items that might be overlooked because they aren't mentioned in the typical audio rags, hence others from across the ponds are aware of them, while we tend to settle due to lack of exposure............, not i. I love being that guy that has friends all over the globe whom are willing to educate me in those areas I'm blind.

And once again............., I dare anyone to call me out once you've heard these cables - please, o_oh please tell me I can't hear............., I dare you.

Nuff ' Said.

Take care of yourself young man, the stories shall continue............ :yes:_oh.

Ben,

I'll be 57 on May 31st, and with all the pain I live through from time to time, even a 90 year old can out walk me, and in hindsight the mind if not body stays fresh - and 66 is a blessing in itself when we take into account how have passed on younger then that - Live it, Earn it, Love it.

And like the Mel Gibson movie - Forever Young. We can all dream, can we not?.

Hey Ben...don't sweat it, while I'm just a tad younger than Oscar, he calls me little brother! Makes me feel good to know some one is calling my big tale little! It's all good!

But may I remind you fine gents....less we run some off the thread for thinking the title has nothing to do with our conversations....let's tie it all into thee iFI Micro and how it enhances it. Cause Lord knows, what I'm hearing over here from my little Micro, ain't nothing short of fabulous! I mean 1bit audio? This ain't PCM done right fellas...this is the closest sound to vinyl one will get without spinning a record on the turntable. And I'm loving it just the same!

And for you, mi bro! I know you running PCM over there, with them fancy usb cables, but bro come on! You gots to give the Neutral USB Cables a run for their money and report back how the DSD 128 has you feeling on the in side! Good music touches the heart, mi man!...PCM ain't going to cut it man with them cables, cause until you do, you still running PCM.....You gots it all in place, mi man....you still behind the 8 ball....come on and get with it! It's DSD 128 time! And that's an order bro, less we strip you of your "audio done right" card!:D you holding up the DSD done right frat club bro! so come on man, and do it "DSD Done Right" is what's up!

On another note, Mi fellow DSD bros....if you've a chance, either convert it from a ripped copy of a CD or find a down load if available of Joshua Redman "back East" album. I've the CD ripped in Flac and doing DSD128 on the fly. The depth and spacing are remarkable! The CD when played on a CDP never ever sounded like this. As I've been preaching for some time now...CDP just can't give you all of what's on those silver disc.....I suspect a vinyl copy on a properly Set up TT would do what the iFI is able to do. This is remarkable....the iFI Micro is what a cat aught to want for! Or the Concero or Hugo or whatever you want. Price is righteous for what you get in the ultimate experience of enjoying high end DSD128 music!

One of the brothas...Lee Harvey told me he's kinda Jaded. Yeah I feel Ya, Lee Harvey....DSD128 has exploded and its doing something new...so call me Jaded as well....all you other fellas who can't feel me or Lee Harvey, I understand...but that's alright! Cause I'm Jaded!

Well, to get it kind of back on track, but not all the way back to the Micro...yet (that will happen when I can figure out the next question).....

Is there a "How To Convert To DSD Using JRiver For Dummies" type of article floating out there anywhere? I've tried to go in in achieve that but so far am not successful. I use Foobar as well (actually mostly, but heard it's even less user friendly when trying to achieve these things). I want to hear the DSD magic slippers-on is talking about but so far have been settling for regular FLAC which, like even mp3 or streaming music, the Micro makes sound so good anyway. Thanks.

And therein lies my dilemma as well..........., as mentioned earlier, I simply don't know how to go about setting my tracks up to be converted as of yet, that's why my intent is to have Dave whom is a computer geek come by and assist me in going so - I'm not the techie sort and once again admitted that awhile back little Brotha - so once again it's coming, maybe not today or tomorrow, but soon enough.

But the fancy cables are proven their worth with said IFi devices to my ears with standard PCM and seemingly plenty of people aren't sold on DSD quite yet, so in my mind as long as I know it's going to get better..........., what's the rush?, none.

As stated earlier.........., old boy doesn't yet understand the requirements to setup things for DSD yet, but in the mean time I do enjoy exploring cables unknown to most Americans and am proud to say I've come across some gems that local shop owners wouldn't know jack about - which is why I enjoyed being a audio hardware buyer earlier on during my youth, if enabled me to get out and hear things much much differently then others, yet years afters still have quite a few ex-customers as well as newer guys whom have read my post on various forums contact me and ask for recommendations based simply on what I've writen in the past - in that sense.........., it seems that some are more willing to trust my ears/taste then others, and I'm just happy to have been in a position to assist the ones I could.

But I'm not concerned about being disowned or fitting into a Boyz club simply because Im not running DSD - as a sometimes sole listener, I'm used to being by myself or enjoying tunes with the wife, and at day's end I'm happy in doing things as Olde blue eyes once sang " My Way ".

But the fancy cables are proven their worth with said IFi devices to my ears with standard PCM and seemingly plenty of people aren't sold on DSD quite yet, so in my mind as long as I know it's going to get better..........., what's the rush?, none.

Those who aren't sold...I'd like to think they can't hear or something's wrong with rig. No computer expert needed. I've posted instructions two postings ago.

Bro........, I feel you, and I'm sold on the whole concept behind the merits of DSD, but am using Audirvana Plus, hence the need for assistance, you work with this technology - I on the other hand worked with people in both the Armed Services - Audio Retail and as an X-Ray Technician in days gone by, I don't understand this shite, it's that simple.

So if anyone can walk me through how to convert standard downloads ( all of 4.150 tracks ) into said DSD 128?, as I don't own a single CD, so care less about ripping, please provide a graphic detail here.

This is the closest I've come to understanding how it's done:

Thanks.
