Going Digital!

Thanks for the update! And what you have posted is the same thing I'm hearing from others. So how does one justify the cost of the iFI iUSB 3.0? I'd say its still doing more, even the guy who makes the REGEN said that. ALso the iFI does look better....and we have yet to see if the 3.0 USB Standard has any sonic improvement or if its just technology thats not audible. Once again thanks for your kind review!

You're more then welcome little Brotha,

As I really haven't followed much on either on other forums, in so much as gauge what a few of you've added here, with you and Lee Harvey actually being the first to own the 3.0 and made me curious enough to see what was what, and I'm glad I did, but as you've stated.............., we've to see what else is possible from the 3.0 used in said light with the proper cabling, as well as used with said options of even better LPS than I've at present.

But in the end, I'd have to say that if someone fails to hear the benefits that either of these brings to the table.............., then forgive my rudeness, but maybe, just maybe it's because they can't hear to begin with, but as it stands with my system and ears.............., these are must-own devices one or the other, or both simply have to be heard|felt to be believed.

And once again, your welcome, let's continue on this quest as its getting way interesting to this olde school cat whom learning a lot about this whole CA thing of the future............., lead on.

Oscar, I am glad that the Regen showed up for you and you are enjoying it. Like I said give the Regen some time to settle in. Both the Regen and iUSB 3.0 make system improvements that can be easily heard. They just have two the different flavors that you have notated. Both units offer much value for their respective prices. No need to get a Fan Boy war here over these two units on which one sounds best. Neither break bank money wise. I am keeping both of my units for now and will play with both of them.

My USB 3.0 type cable showed up today and I have it plugged in between my Windows PC on its 3.0 ports and into the iUSB 3.0. Right now the system sounds as good as my Pangea silver USB 2.0 cable. But we need to give things a few days of listening and comparing to see if a $5.99 cable with a better data transfer solution can match a $100 older generation cable?

Good evening Lee Harvey,

As you've stated, I can't see anyone going wrong with either of the two as they both serve their respective purposes quite well, and it merely comes down to one preference of flavoring as we've both noted, much like ones taste in speakers............, while I'm very fond of say the DeVore Fidelity Gibbon 3XLs, I wouldn't for a moment pass up a great deal on a pair of Boenicke W5s as another valid option in which both move me, yet once again simply specialize in doing music from different perspectives where once again, neither does wrong as far as I'm concerned.............., so no desire to be a fan boy for any of these as it merely always comes back to what the end user considers as being more akin to music versus another's.

I'll be waiting to see what thus dedicated 3.0 USB cable does for you?, as I've decided to narrow down my cable search to two more brands at which point, I don't see the need to spend more, or better yet continue trying to improve upon what's in house.

All this illustrates is that one can in fact have a very very very very good sounding CA based system if one selects something that has been voiced maturely as to resemble more expensive wares, as the iFi and UpTone devices have shown me the way, and I can see why a few guys have actually stopped worrying themselves with the date release of the upcoming iFi iDSD Pro, because in retrospect the sound on offer here is not something one could've gotten for less then spending say $2.500 on a CD player in years gone by..................., but in all honesty, these devices are doing so much justice to the signal that's crazy real in the best sense that I don't question why..............., in so much as merely look forward to every waking moment be enlightened in a way that merely puts my mind and body at ease as if for the first time in my entire life, where I've allowed myself to step outside of myself, the concerns of a world where I can't change things and merely breathe at ease.

It's weird now much a well balanced system, as well as growth allows us each to gauge our set of prioritizing in a much different light as our minds are set adrift with delight, as well as a keener sense of peace within.

I for one have learned so much from thus thread and pray that others have decided to at least give these devices a listen, as they all deserve to be better known just for the sake of musicality as shown through such nicely voiced and mature design concepts.

Brother Byron ( yes, I spelled it right on purpose this time around ) once again I thank thee for encouraging me to step up to the plate and follow suit.........., as I do feel in my heart that both companies are doing a wonderful service to music lovers from all walks of life and should be commended, so with that being said..........., while siblings might have moments when they disagree with one another, at day's end do kiwi that you've gained a true friend in me for life.

Be well Lee Harvey | Byron | Dave | Tim | Rich | Bob | Joe | ArtK and anyone else whom I've failed to mention by name, but include all of you in my prayers none the least, as we are extensions of one another, no matter how one views it..........., and Brothers-In-Arms shall always remain just that, as well as of the flesh.

Onwards and outwards I'd say.
o_Oh

I was just wondering... How is that a USB cable has an effect on digital data? Does it change 0's to 1's? 1's to 2's? And since it seems like such a critical component, then shouldn't your Ethernet cable, the coax fed from your ISP, your modem, ad infinitum. When I bought my first HDTV I was duped into buying a $250.00 Audioquest HDMI cable and neither myself or anyone else I have shown can tell the difference between that and the $4.99 HDMI. An explanation of the physics and mechanics of the "Hi end USB" cable would be enlightening.

Hi Audiobro!

No disrespect, but Lets not go down that road here, please! If you can't hear any difference, well you can't hear it. Without going into technical speak, some can and do hear differences. I'd say let's move on from that sort of discussion as you can find other threads for that.

Well, Oscar...im just happy IFI/AMR stepped up to the plate and gave us the iUSB3.0 ...As reported before, I've never heard the REGEN in my system, and from what I'm hearing now, I really don't know that I need to. I've just rippped a bunch of old SADE CD's to DSD 128, and the detail that's coming out...I've never ever noticed on CD. I think I may invest into a better ripper like DB CDRIPPER or some other CD ripper! Even looking to upgrade the CD tray...so lots of research is to be had first. Also considering upgrading the USB ports on my computer as well....So my attention may go to a better computer as well.

I was not trolling. I saw quite a discussion of USB cables going on here and thought I might gain some knowledge and understanding. Sorry to bother.

Ok, I understand. It's just this thread has gone off the rails enough times we didn't need to open up the cable debate here. To lean more do some internet seaches on folks like Gordon Rankin of Wavelength and Ted Smith at PS Audio. These guys have pretty much led the way for USB based High Fidelity audio. The engineers at iFi have been doing an wonderful job at this too. Which is the point of this thread.

Firstly, I was conveying my experience with an HDMI cable, not USB. Maybe it's my bad for lumping the two in the same category. I have not had the opportunity to listen to the difference between any USB cables. I am a bit disgruntled and a bit disappointed in myself when I discovered that a turntable could sound better than CD. I am attempting to find my way back to digital, or at least how to make it sound as good as analog (My hearing notwithstanding). And with the title "Going Digital" it seemed the appropriate place. BTW I have worked in audio in quite a few different capacities, albeit 20 yrs. ago.

Jealous of your Ohm Walsh 2's botrytis! I happen to be on a quest to understand digital, I thought at one time I had a good grasp. My current and now never used Nak CD-4 is no match for my Denon DP60L. I have done the "Pepsi challenge" with The Beatles White album, The Who Quadrophenia, Chili Pepper's Blood, sugar, sex, magic, to name a few. In every instance the TT sounded much better than the CDP. RHCP was about the closest. Before considering investing in a DAC or any other digital equipment I would like to know that I could achieve the same quality as my TT or am I just eliminating the ticks and pops?

Audiobro! Don't know how much loot you want to spend. I believe a great turntable rig still has a little something you can't get from a great DAC doing DSD128. But to my ears you can still get a very good analog sound....just depends on the associated gear. I great DAC like the iFI Micro DSD DAC and quality gear with the right software, and you there. I was doing some listening today through the digi rig and it was excellent...vinyl like!

Good morning B,

Man I didn't receive any notice that there were any responses to this thread of late, so I'm sorry for the late response, but I'm happy that they saw the need to correct a few oversights on the original as well, as I too am having those moments more and more while listening where the wife has to come over and rub my shoulders asking me what's wrong?, and I generally just tell her some dust got into my eyes............, she kindly says " it's okay to cry, I'm glad to know that you can ".

But in truth............., what I'm hearing by them tied together with the AQ Jitterbug, is enlightening to say the least, and while I can't explain what each of them is bringing to the table, I can say once again this is something to which I've yet to hear from any CD player I've owned, or heard in friends homes costing a great deal more then what each of us has invested here.

So rip on..........., and as always lets see how far this can be taken?, as I'd imagine that it gets much much much better. For now, I'm just adding to my music collection as well as hearing old tunes that I thought I knew well anew.

Come on Curious Cable USB, and a dual head USB and I'm thinking I'm done.................., lest I forget to add once again a nicer LPS, as even this cheaper one has shown me the light on said importance of clean power, yet an end is near..............., so let's continue shall we?.

I have setup a new experiment for the weekend. This is how I have everything hooked up now. Windows 10 PC w/JRiver out it's USB 3.0 port to the $5.99 USB 3.0 type cable to the iUSB 3.0. From there using a Pangea silver cable to the Regen's input and then the Regen is plugged into the iDSD via port adapters. Analog out of the iDSD via Kimber Silver Streaks to the iTube and then Silver Streaks to the Exposure amp and then to the speakers. The iUSB 3.0 is using the power supply that came with it and the Regen is using the aftermarket LPS set to 8 volts.

The Regen has been powered off and disconnected for 10 days so it needs some time warm up. I will be checking on how this setup works over the weekend. Some folks over on Computeraudiophile like this kind of setup using both the iUSB 3.0 and Regen together.

Actually Lee Harvey,

That's more or less what I've been using over the course of the last three days........., the iUSB 3.0 connected directly to the Regen which was first using the hard adapter directly into the iDSD DAC, and using that Neutral Cable USB between Mac Mini and 3.0, but upon placing that Supra USB into the system.................., I'm rethinking the importance of a more costly one right now, and am thinking its time to head towards one of those better LPS units and place the other stuff on the back burner.

Once again, I'd like to thank you for pointing out the settings on your LPS, as it gives me something to listen through until I'm certain which setting best fits my system and ear, but needed somewhere to start, but man once again................, the Supra while cheap............., isn't a joke and has me rethinking that whole copper versus silver plated copper and pure copper option, as its copper based.............., but hitting the notes with just the right amount of weight - resolution - attack - transparency and tonal shadings up the arse............., this has to be some of the best pronounced bass ( plucking and decay ) as well guitar ( strumming and picking ) as well as lingering cymbal decay that's spooky real as I've heard in years..............., and once again for the price of peanuts it you were to ask me.

This **** is checking off all the right boxes in my mind.

Please do share your findings, as its always nice to hear your point of view on said matters, as you've helped me a great deal in finding my way through all of this, so a big " THANKS " for your willingness to help the blind find my way into the light.

Please don't sleep on that Supra USB guys............., you'll hate yourself if you do.

I believe the Pangea not being 3.0 negates what the 3.0 USB cable is doing. Have you used the hub yet?

Yeah...CD aught not even be mentioned, that is unless one is talking about ripping to DSD128! Man, these devices are simply a blessing with all the filtering that's going on....improving all of what we are hearing.....they really bring me closer to the music! Man I can't speak for any one else, but the iUSB 3.0 is still running in over here! I'm hearing something that would truly make one think he is listening to vinyl...I'm even closer to that warm vinyl sound as the iUSB3.0 seems to have hit another gear over here. I'm also seeing deeper into the music, and the spacing and staging are excellent! For the ultimate in relaxation, I can use the random option in the software and sit back...it's like I'm in musical discovery all over again.

TTYL.
