Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Walked in to the local GW y'day. Sitting on the shelf was a SX-535, 2 Sansui SP-200(with the wood latticework on the Grille) and a POS BOTTOM FEEDER BSR Turntable. $25. The tires on the cart were smokin as I went to the cashiers. I gave them back the BSR as they said pkg deal. (it was worth it). The SX-535 cleaned up really nice, Dc Offset was 17mv (L) and 23mv(R), so adjusted that, and the Sansui's got 1 or 2 small pieces broke out of the lattice(my sister has a set that I fixed the lattice on) so I can fix that nicely. Cab's have the usual scratches and nicks on the corners that new veneer will handle. Drivers in Excellent condition. Cab's got some old English Scratch cover and some Johnson's Paste wax today. 535 is gonna get new Wood Veneer, I HATE plastic veneer.

today walked into the local St Vinnes, saw they finally had some different records. Grapped a bunch, 3 Beatles, 3 Simon and Garfunkel, 3 Led Zepplin, 2 who (Tommy and who's next), segar, floyd, Aerosmith, Queen,3 Van Halen, Springsteen, and a bunch more....50 cents each....total of 30 records (and 9 of them were double albums). Many in great shape. There was a ton more that I didn't want so I called a friend and she bought a bunch of Def Lepord, White Snake, and bunch of stuff, I am going back again, I left a bunch of Elvis and other stuff...I didn't have an more CASH....Let you know if there is any thing left...the cashier said you were the first one to look at them....that never happens to me...

Weekend scores.

Went to The Humane Society 1st Saturday yardsale. Picked up a pair of A/D/S L-9E speakers, I think maple finish for $5.00. :banana: Sides & tops had minor scratches, but the the metal covers were fine. Will try to refinish later. Sounded fantastic. Picked up at the local flea for $10, a Garrard GT-55 TT :yes: in very nice shape, minus dustcover. Needs a new belt, thr stanton 680 EE needs a new stylus. Will probably change it anyway.
 
Found a near mint Yamaha CR-600 for 9.00 at GW today. Pots are scratchy as usual and all of the bulbs except for the tuning meter bulb are out. As soon as I find where to get new bulbs, it will be good to go. Added: Found the bulbs from an AK member, thanks.

I scored a very nice pair of HH Scott S-15 speakers for $15 at a local thrift store today. I keep checking this one because I passed up a pair AR3's that needed some love. They wanted $20 for them and When I found out what they were and how much just the parts bring, they of course were gone.

But Today, Score, Me! The S-15's sound fantastic, better in some ways than my Newly restored KLH model 6's.

All of the Speakers are working but the switches aren't, gotta look into that.
 
I must've been a good boy lately...

After finding the Superscope unit I wrote about last week, I walked into a Savers today and found an SX-780 in very good shape. Only missing the switch tip for the loudness control.

$29.95, and have it running right now. Pots and switches are clean, and will only need very minor exterior clean up.

Been a good week...
 
I just picked up a pair of pioneer cs-a31 speakers at GW for $8. They are 16 ohms and the cabinets are in decent shape except for some corner damage on one. The drivers all work too.

Went to a garage sale and there on a card table was a dirty but mint Marantz 2220b for 3 bucks. I buy it and take it home figuring if its junk I'm out 3 bucks. Power it up and everything works audio wise. Just needed a lamp, the pots all cleaned,the speaker selector switch lubed and the '' Gyro touch'' mechanism adjusted. that all cost me 50 bucks and the thing is like brand new now. I went back to the garage sale the next day and asked the lady if she by chance had the owners manual,she didnt. Her son pipes in and says ''lucky for you you bought that receiver when you did cause I would have never let it out of here for 3 bucks'' What can I say? right place, right time....

Her son should have had that sucker someplace outa mom's way if he wanted it, or he wanted more cash for it for that matter! Not your fault she had it for sale and you bought it :)
 
Voice of Music

I scored a "Voice of Music" (VM) console at the GW today for $4.85 after discount card and sales tax:banana:

I appears to be a tube setup in excellent condition, with working turntable and great sounding speakers.

It's a model 818 3, which appears to be from the late 50's to early 60's.


I'll do an obligatory recapp of the power amp and find another place for this one in the house.
 
Good Friday indeed!

Again, it all comes down to right place at the right time. I always seem to be at the right place, but just a few minutes too late! Well it was a good Friday indeed for me!!! Stopped by a garage sale, and tucked way in the back of the garage was a TEAC X-2000R, along with an enormous amount of tapes. Price said $75.00 on the machine. I asked the lady if that was the correct price, and how much the tapes were going for. She was like "Thats $75.00 for everything" Bad position to be in with only 10 bucks in your pocket! So I gave her the 10 bucks, hauled butt back to town and borrowed $65.00 to get back there before somebody else scarfed it up! 20 minutes later and with my bumper almost dragging from the shear amount of weight in tapes (147 in all) I don't believe I have ever smiled so much in my life. What you see on the shelf are the tapes, along with 5 new empty reels, 14 sealed tapes, and the deck works! Just a small issue with the pinch rollers engaging when in play mode. All better now with some fresh lube and a through cleaning. Just gotta keep trying if the deals pass you by, eventually you'll score!

HI guys... and I thought the only one scouring around thrift shops for old speakers/amps was me.

Great to be part of teh community.

Picked up a Rotel rx 602 $35AUD

FOund a pair of Audiolab speakers for a mate for $10AUD/each. Hoping to buy them back off him once if he leaves the city, as they are apparently late 70's audiophile quality speakers.

ALso picked up a smaller late 80s technics amp purely because of its small size $35AUD.

At the moment, I'm trying to sort out a pair of Big white Jap speakers i bought from the same store. THe tweeter on one of them isn't working. THey are 3 way crossover with a 12'' woofer and I need to figure out if it's the crossover busted or the tweeter itself.

You said it. I have a routine when I hit the thrifts. Tuesday, I changed it and arrive at one of the thrifts I go to about 15 minutes later than normal. I walked to the back where the electronics are. Nothing. As I went to the front, I saw a fellow had just paid for a large silver Kenwood receiver, he had it setting on his buggy and heading for the door. I didn't get the model # as he would not slow down & talk to me. I did see the price sticker was $7.98. I could have kicked myself for changing my schedule.:tears: Hope to have better luck this weekend.

Latest score 1970 B &W DM 70 electrostatic speaker from a dump shop (ie someone threw them out) in Motueka New Zealand for NZ$50 (US$25). Crazy, crazy days
