OMG over the years i had all sorts....a Sony X333ES CD player and pair of Sennheiser HD 650 headphones via a Pro-Ject audio Headphone amp was the last audio i owned before i left.......all got sold before i left.......just too much of a hassle to bring them over......

LOL well im in Fredericton NB...so were not in competition....the stores round here are picking up with new stuff after the long snow covered winter, now the weather is improving a bit people are throwing out all there unwanted 70's silver faced hifi (hopefully)......
 
Well I guess you're too far away to compete in the thrift stores :). They actually haven't been all that good around here lately, seems people comb them over pretty good and sell everything for double on kijiji. For a lot of stuff that's still a good deal and I guess it saves me from wearing out pairs of sneakers on the weekends (not that I have enough time to browse the thrift stores these days anyway).

I just had a guy ship something from the Moncton area to me. It was about a 35lb receiver and the shipping was only $20 via Canada Post (which was what I paid for the thing anyway). It's arriving this week so I'll get to see what kind of shape it stays in. So Fredricton doesn't seem all that far away anymore for the long arm of my audio addiction ;). Just kidding. I'll keep an eye out for any upgrades I find being offered for cheap within a reasonable distance of you that you might be interested in.

They recently (within the past 2 or 3 years) stopped taking electronics as trash in my area. You have to take it to the disposal depot yourself now and when you buy anything new there is a surcharge of 10 or 15 dollars to cover the disposal fee. You used to be able to find tons of stuff just driving by on trash day, but now since they won't take electonics, nobody puts them on the curb anymore. I used to love leaving ok stuff out there myself to see it gone in the morning before the trash man came.

Don't take this addiction too lightly. Your place could be full of gear in a very short time. You'll make a deal for some small item someday and find out that the seller is an experienced vintage audio junkie whose started to purge his collections. I went to a fellows house to buy a $20 tuner once and walked out with over $200 worth of gear, including a monster receiver and 5 or 6 other sizeable pieces of vintage gear. His wife was very pleased... mine, not so much.

In the UK we had nothing in the way of thrift shops, well none that sold any hifi stuff and if they did it would be junk as they sold all the decent stuff on ebay.........

Its a revelation here......i picked up a 1956 Longines automatic watch for $2.....the salesgirl said i think it needs a battery.........yeah.....

So what im saying is the salespeople dont care what they sell the stuff for, they know the value of a good sofa......but a huge piece of 70's hifi is just junk to them to be got rid of for a few $'s.....thank goodness.........

I will be on the hunt for more stuff this weekend..........just got to convince the wife we have room for the stuff..........

Salvation Army, Electro Voice Cardinal Condenser cardioid vocal/instrument microphone new in the box. Pre-tax total??...$1.90! New price is about $200. That's a deal! And its pretty too.

My latest find - Ottawa Salvation army:

Sony STR-6046A... $5.99.
Was dirty as hell inside and out, had some burned out bulbs, has the wrong knobs and a scratched wood case. I think it still cleaned up nicely - and sounds terrific!! Can't beat the price :tresbon:

One thing I found incredible when I took this unit apart was that the face surround is actual chrome! It weighs a few pounds by itself... I will never cease to be amazed by the build quality of these receivers, just superb. Call me crazy but sometimes I think I would still buy a junk unit if it looks good - it's almost like art!

These things were fairly high end in their day which was before the WPC wars which dominated the second half of the 70s.

I have a completely restored Sansui QRX-3500 circa 1974 which is only valued as an era piece. Quad enthusiasts don't seem to respect it because it has primitive (minimal) separation and it's fairly underpowered to garner any respect from audiophiles seeking sound quality.

But it does sound decent enough and it looks very cool and weighs a ton for its wpc and so it stays in the collection... for now at least. (I'm a true believer we only kind of lease these things anyway - unless of course I had a Sansui G33000 - then I might want it buried with me).

The QRX3500 actually has the same style real wood case as your Sony, right down to the vent slits being cut right out of the wood.

It's the indicator that tells you whether you're in a 2 or a 4 channel mode.

Most quad receivers in early and mid 70's had some kind of flashy indicator for quad. There was an optional remote for the QRX3500 which just controlled the quad and consisted mainly of a joystick.

Just found a Kenwood KD-65F linear tracking DD TT NIB for $6.99!!! It kinda looks a bit cheaply made, but the thing weighs a ton and seems to be a very solid unit. Had the original cart and stylus, however, I replaced it with an AT 6006 and shibata stylus. Another plus is that this one is made in Japan.

Not sure but I think those knobs are off a Gx000 Sansui. Getting replacements can be tricky as I think the knobs scaled with the receiver's size, so that the G8000 knobs were bigger than the G6000's, even though they otherwise looked the same. The original knob (assuming it is original) looks pretty much like a generic Pioneer knob of that era and it might be easier to find four (or five) of them than one of the Sansui's.
