at last count there is no authentic replacement fabric. the usual suggestion is to use either what you like, or try to find something close enough to the oem material. and don't forget the second layer of thin, black fabric behind the grille cloth. some say it helps tame the tweeter a bit. i personally don't notice the difference.

I can't help you with the grill cloth, but how did the refoam go with your Advents?

The refoam job turned out great. In fact, I have purchased two more pairs...one for my father-in-law and one for me. The one for my father in law will need to be refoamed so I will see if luck or is it just that easy. I love the sound of tha Advents stacked and listen to them almost everyt night.

I offer 6 fabrics in variouis shades of tan for classic speakers like Advent, AR, etc... PM me for pictures. Five are made from linen and 1 from cotton. Linen was the fabric originally used in most classic speakers.
The burlap fabrics being offered by ATS Acoustics may be problematic. I have looked at burlap a number of times. Although I have not seen ATS's samples specifically, I have found burlap to be coarse and very 'hairy'. The fabric weight seems quite high also at 10 oz/sq. yd. Classic grille fabrics generally ran in the 4-6 oz range. I did a study some time back on fabrics and found two key acoustic transparancy variables: 1) weave count (threads/in. in each direction) and 2) coarsness of the threads. More fine fibers sticking out of a fabric's weave tend to cause a reduction in throughput of the upper frequencies. Polyester fabrics are best for having smooth fibers and acoustic transparency, but they simply don't have that classic linen look.

it looks like the ats fabrics are designed to absorb mid and high frequencies, as they are for room treatment panels.

I've had some requests for the pic and have re-sized it to fit the .jpeg size limit. Hope I don't get yelled at by a moderator.
The pic doesn't do the colors of the samples justice. Most look different shades of grey. However, they are all different shades of tan. For example #6 is a deep rust color. Swatches available also.
Also PM those who asked about the pic with my much larger grille cloth study done on some of the fabrics I offer - but not all.
Once again, sample #6 is no longer available

I picked up some burlap style fabric from my local Jo Ann's Fabrics for $2.99 a yard which looks good to me. They had a lighter color and a darker color and I went with the lighter on my Small Advents. The New Large Advents look good enough that I decided not to recover them.

If you read the description (last paragraph), it states as follows:
* Fine grade extra wide burlap used for decorating, acoustics, wall panels, etc.
* 10 oz. weight, fairly smooth surface
* Ideal for us in acoustic projects such as speakers, bass traps, and sound absorbing panels.
* Also great for home decorating and other projects, the smooth but textured look of the burlap gives it a designer touch.
* Available in NFPA 701 fire rated or regular untreated versions.
* Sold by the yard. One yard is 56" wide by 36" long.
All our burlap ships unfolded on a roll. This helps a lot when the goal is a wrinkle-free finished result. (We’ve tried ironing burlap - trust us, buy it on a roll and save a lot of trouble.)
For acoustics projects, the weave on this fabric is open enough to let the high frequencies pass through, but not so open that you can see through it.
I'm not saying this is perfect, but it is as close as I have found so far.
I'm still looking though.
Ultimately, you will have to decide for yourself which fabric you wish to use.

I did two pair of Advents with burlap and used a ultra fine black sheer under the burlap. I don't believe this was used to 'tame the tweeter' bot simply to give a uniform appearence otherwise the driver cones would show as black shadows.

Good to hear. Good luck fixing the grill cloth, I have to construct some new grills for my KLH 6's so this information should be useful.

Hi; It's been a while since your original post, but do you still offer the speaker fabric? Looking for a set for Large Advents, as close a match as possible; #2 in your samples look similar to the OEM as best as I can tell...will also need the black cloth that goes behind the grill fabric. Thanks.

Carl aka spkrdtr died about the time of his last post. He was always a really good guy to deal with. He left a lot of info here and classic speaker pages. I bought cloth from him a couple of times and he was giving me advice on the KLH fives I was working on at the time. He mentioned he hadn’t been doing well health wise and that somebody would be taking over his inventory. He had been working on getting me cloth to match a previous order and that never happened. I tried to figure out who took over his business but never figured it out. His website and other info disappeared.
This is a really close match for most NLA and the OLA that aren’t the more “yellow” color.

Here's the thread which shows the stuff I bought. The thread count is a bit tighter but the color and texture is perfect and, unless you have an Advent with original fabric right next to a re-fabicked one and look real close, you can't tell.
