Gunther Schuller passes at 89.

A prolific figure in 20th Century music of many genres, I first knew him from the Ragtime revival of the 1970s and his production on Angel records of The Red Back Book.

A sad loss. I treasure this great LP conducted by him, a disc that opened for me Charles Ives' universe.

The tribute at NPR is worth a read.
Found his 2nd Ragtime LP at a shop a few weeks ago, I need to play it in his memory.

Been playing his Little Red Record/Scott Joplin tracks for over 20 years - glorious stuff!

I worked under him once. The orchestra was playing a piece that started with 3 (I think) very dissonant loud chords with the entire orchestra playing very loud. He stopped after the three chords and told the 2nd trombone player that in the second chord he should be playing an F# instead of F-natural. The trombone player was VERY close to me and I could hardly hear him.

Guess that's part of the reason he was famous -- got the talent!!
