h/k 330c

i'm looking for power amp idling adjust to do this correct?
measure across r428 resistor, adjust vr402 to 10 mv +-1
then across r427 resistor, adjust vr401 to 10 mv +-1
if this is the case, i may be out of luck, it says to hook up a resister across the speaker terminals to measure. without it i'm at around 10.1mv on right 11.8 on left.

ok 10.0 left 10.1 right, and that wasn't it lol, still at 30 mv on that pesky left channel, i'll keep looking

i believe it's vr 301 or 302, the more i look at this the more i understand how much i don't know about this stuff, even if i am correct, i'm not sure where to take the measurement. grr

I have a 330B on the way. Are the letter designations just for differant cosmetic changes, or is it something more. Looking at the manuals that Manitoulin & Mhardy were kind enough to provide, I see pushbuttons on the "C", and rocker switches on the "B". I picked it up for .99

All the 330 models are different internally. IMHO, it is a good assumption that as SS components improved, new designs were created to reflect. Distortion certainly was lower on the 330c

Simple differences:

The Three Thirty was first; all black face. The successors had black / silver faces.

The 330A had pre-out/main-in jumpers, seperate bass and treble controls for each channel.

330b upgraded components from 330a

330c dropped the seperate bass and treble control for each channel.

Three Thirty and 330a had wood veneer cases optional. 330b had vinyl covered case optional. Optional wooden case for 330c is extremely rare. Never seen one, but would guess it would be vinyl.

The h/k 330 (and the rest of the x30's h/k receivers) don't have an adjustment for DC offset. They have one adjustment in the amp section and that is to set the bias for the amp. If you read through the long thread 'Amplifier offset, distortion and you....' (or something like that) by Echowars you will see that you would need to probably put in a new matched pair of the input differential transistors to lower the DC that appears at the speaker posts. 30 mV isn't too bad and it may not be worth worrying about in this case.

Steve.

thanks stevep, i read through most of that post but i must have missed that.

Manitoulin: the case on the 330c is black textured vinyl, kinda resembles rough weave fabric.
I wish i had a digital camera so you guys can see this thing. I have it all cleaned up and it looks and sounds great. All the buttons and knobs are there, all the lights, everything works, This is the best 10 bucks i've ever spent

I don't remember if the x30's h/k recievers are mentioned specifically in that thread, but putting in new matched differential transistors is the 'general rule' for fixing offset problems on amps with no offset adjustment variable resistor.

I should have been more specific. OPTIONAL Case for 330c is extremely rare. Never seen one, but would guess it would be vinyl based on the 730 case.

I may look in to doing that, however I've never been an electronics guy so it would be a bit of an experiment. If i was to do it i'd need a whole lot of hand holding lol.

Gotta say i'm really pleased with this thing, been listening to it since i got it yesterday and it sounds really good, have it hooked up to a pair of polk M series shelf speakers (m3ii) and it rocks!

Manitoulin: lol guess i should have known that, that little 330c is right there in your sig!

I got my 330B in today, I deoxed the switches, as the add stated that if you tapped the controls, the channel would come back in. It is definately differant than the 330C from the manual. I got brave and tried a pair of headphones, right just a bit weaker than the left, maybe some more flushing, but I checked for DC and I'm getting half a volt directly out of the terminals, both A & B. Am I doing something wrong? Anybody have the "B' SM? I hooked up a test speaker to see if it would melt, and it gave a pretty nice sound. I got it for .99, so don't want to go crazy, but don't want to damage a couple of hundred dollars worth of speakers either. Banish it to the Garage system?

Thanks Joe! It's working OK even wit all of that DC. At least now I see things to try and adjust it down. You still want it if I end up letting the smoke out of it?

Well,
Tweaking the pots brought it in to about 108MV. It's a pretty wide swing, and really touchy. I don't have a resistor between the posts, nor a signal generator, so I assume this is as good as I'm going to get. A lot better than .5V though. It's a pretty nice little unit.

I appologize if I seem to taking over this thread, but I need to let you guys all know that you are correct with this H/K stuff. I've had it running a pair of little JBL surround speakers, (nothing special if it were to eat them) for awhile. Well I hooked it up to a pair of Marantz HD-660's, and when I turned it on, I was not prepared for what I heard. Soooo nice. :thmbsp: First thing on the radio was Bob Seger's Against the wind, crisp and clean. Tried some Rock, did OK, but, it's really singing with some Jazz. I didn't expect this much from it. I took the knobs off to clean them, what are they, machined aluminum? And the dual ganged bass & treble is a nice touch. The tuner is pulling in a strong 7 on the meter with nothing but a single wire on one terminal. Got to be the best .99 I've ever spent. What might be the next logical progression if I were to want another H/K? Keep in mind a very tight budget. Thanks again for the help guy's!

Looking at the manual, the 330b is cap-coupled, so DC will appear at the outputs if speakers aren't connected. Does the DC go away with a speaker load?

TP
