The 330C is a really nice way to get into the hobby and is well thought of. For $10, heck here in Toronto, that's the proce of a pack of smokes. Enough power to get most speakers to sing. H-K and especially these series are well liked by most owners and happily there are not too many models so when you decide you need 1 of each you won't need to rent a 100,000 sq' warehouse. The upper models sport dual power supplies including dual power transformers that most companies did not use except in their high end amps. The 330C does not have the dual supplies but that is not a deterent.

I love my 330C
It looks and sounds wonderful, I even think I prefer it to the 730 I have.

Always use a set of crappy headphones before using speakers. If by some obscure chance the receiver is punching out pure DC, all you lose is a set of headphones. Usually, I operate all controls and switches a few times before a power on as well. It seems to do a rough cleaning. All switches should be off; eg high filter, low filter, tape mon, etc. Do a good visual inspection to make sure there is not any stray speaker wire strands that may be shorting out the speaker leads. Volume to lowest position and power on. I start on FM, even before plugging in the headphones to see if the unit lights and the meter works. If the meter does not move and there are no lights, I don't even bother with the headphones as this usually indicates a problem with the power supply. If the meter moves, plug in the headphones, but do not put them on your head, in case the volume control is bad (protect your ears). If you can faintly hear some sound after raising the volume, then put on the phones and test away.

IMNSHO the hk330C was the single best entry level receiver of its time (mid-1970's) and, at least in Baltimore, zillions were sold to college students by several of the local dealers. hk had the 330C in their lineup for quite a while... and if you count the three-thirty/330A/330B... and even the later analog entry-level receivers, it was a pretty robust model!

my 2 cents (but free to you guys),
I recently a/b'd my 330c vs my 730, and the 330c compared very favorably. They are really nice little receivers.
Vintagestereo - did you see the Citation receiver on Ebay last week? I thought you might be in the hunt for it.

thanks again, just a little update, I followed your advice on turning down volume and nulliing the rest of the settings on the front of the reciever, I was very pleased to find that so far, everything seems to work, the tuner works well in am and fm and sounds really good through the headphones, there is hissing on both channels when adjusting the volume, and static when adjusting the balance (the left channel cuts in and out as well). I still need to clean this amp up internally however. but has been a pleasant little joyride so far.
by the way, thanks much for the welcome, i read a lot of posts before i joined the forum and am pleased that my initial impression has been bourne out. Everyone has been friendly, helpful, and even have a sense of humor.
Right now i'm off to visit the men in white shirts to get a multimeter and some deox/cleaner.

From my experience with the 330c and 730, the pushbuttons (especially the tape monitor button) always caused me much more grief as far as static and channels cutting in and out than the knobs, so be sure to use deoxit on them as well.
If you see a 330c, 430 or 730 on Ebay with a dead or intermittant channel, sometimes all it takes to bring it back is deoxing the buttons. Let me emphasize "sometimes"....
