Harman/Kardon 930 : dial won't light, bulbs ok

Hi,

Recently acquired this receiver.

I can't seem to figure out why the dial scale on this 930 won't light up, despite the fact that all the bulbs are testing ok.

It takes qty. of 7, 6.3v 250ma fuse-type bulbs, all testing fine. Anyone know this unit really well and/or had this problem?

Otherwise, I'll turn to the schematic and see if I can figure it out.

Broken wire from the function switch to the "hot" side of the lamps.Or a bad connection from the ground side of the lamps to chassis ground. Do al the rest of the lamps operate ?

You are switched to AM/FM, right?

The HK 930, 630 and 330 dial face turn off unless the fubctiob selector switch is set to am or fm.

I'll have to look but I'm pretty sure my 330b stays on all the time. I'm sure that my old 330c did. Or did you mean 330 no suffix only?

According to the schematic. The dial lights are only illuminated in the AM or FM function.

Probably right about the 330 models. My 930 switches off and so did my 630 when not in Am or Fm mode.

Yes, all the rest of the lamps operate. Ok, I'll look into the wires you suggest to see if something is astray. Thanks.

How would I know if it's messed up? It seems to do its job otherwise in terms of directing the signal to the appropriate place and also the function indicator lights all work.

Try deox-iting the wafers of the function switch. The rear wafer has the lamp contacts.

Lets try cleaning the switch first.. That may be all thats wrong. A dirty contact.

It could be just that one wafer of the function switch. If cleaning doesn't do the job. Then we have to find out where your losing your lamp voltage by probing various spots along the circuit .

Hmmm. My switches are nice and clean but still no lights.
