Harman/Kardon 930 : dial won't light, bulbs ok

The correct wafer should have and wire coming from the power transformer/pilot light to pin/lug # 9.
 
Look at the schematic diagram. Right hand side close to the center. You will see a wafer segment of the switch labeled ( FUNC 1R ) with only connections being 9,11 & 12.

Thank you very much. Btw, it's the first wafer based on my deoxiting while fired up. Spraying the first wafer was what made it light up, as seen in the video.

OK . So that means there are solder lugs and not solder pins.
 
So on that 1st wafer. Find the wire from lug 9 to the front panel pilot/power light or the power transformer. You can just move that wire from lug 9 . To lug 11 or 12.. and your done.

Thanks to your advice, I rewired #9 to #11 and I now have lights on whenever the unit it powered up. However, thanks to something I did, not sure what, I now have deafening silence instead of music. There's absolutely nothing coming out of headphones or speakers. I fear that it's some point of connection on one of the wafers, but I can't say. It's a mystery. I am even a little lost as to how to troubleshoot this. Thinking of starting a new thread on this topic. *Sigh*
 
Are the main-in / pre-out jumpers still in place ? Tape monitor switch defeated ? Speaker fuses still serviceable ? Speaker selector switch enabled ?
 
From your advice I checked something that I hadn't before: the main-in/pre-out jumpers. In fact they had been removed. Long story as to why this is, but they were gone. I was happy to replace them, but it only solved the problem partially. I now have sound coming through, which is promising, but only sound is AM radio. No line in to aux resulted in sound, nor does FM radio. Talk about confusing! But anyway, I will do some more testing and fiddling tonight to see what I can discover, and post again.

Deoxit your input select switch.As well as check solder connections. Wiggle and exercise all the switches and controls see if you can get it to cut in and out.
 
Unfortunately, I've deoxited the heck out of all of the switches already. I'm going to fiddle with this on Friday when I have time, and post my findings. More soon....
 
So, I scored a 930 for a remarkable price today. Everything seems to function flawlessly. The only issue is no light on the left side of the tuner dial. Wondering if you ever got all your lights to work?

Nice score. It's a nice receiver. Twin power! I did get the bulbs to work. I can't recall what the actual problem was now. But, if the whole set of bulbs doesn't seem to work, I would be inclined to think that it was lacking power to the whole circuit that supplies power to the bulbs. This could be caused by a dirty contact on the selector switch. You need to deoxit it. However, if just a couple of bulbs are not working, I think it's probably a simple case of burned bulbs. Did you pull them out and test them with a multimeter to see if they are working?

I haven't. I don't tinker with the insides just yet. There's a guy with a shop down the road from me I'm going to have check it out in a week or two. I'm hoping to learn some things from him. I'm amazed at how much better this unit drives my speakers than my Kenwood KA-3500. Gorgeous sound. Cheers.
 
i'm pretty sure that you'll find it's just burned bulbs. Easy to replace. Yes, it's a nice receiver. If you like this era of receiver, I'd also highly recommend the Sansui Eight or Eight Deluxe. Perhaps even better than the 930.

I love old Sansuis, but have not seen the right one at a price even close to what I got the 930 for. I did have the chance to get a Kenwood KR-9400 for $200 and passed on it with great difficulty.
