I have a chance to get a Harmon-Kardon, Citation IV tube pre amp.

I don't know much about it. Is it of any value as a pre amp?

I had one briefly. Lots of knobs and switches to get dirty/noisy, but did an adequate job. They are always easy to resell, being a tube item.
Hell, I might want it if my preamp keeps crapping on me. (Not really, my wife won't even let me think about spending another audio dime for quite a while.)

I have listened to one before and liked it so if you can get one that is working for a good price I would go for it. They do get some good prices so unless your getting it from someone that just doesn't know how much they are worth I would definatly look the gift horse in the mouth.

I can't recall what they've been going for on the 'bay, but personally, I don't believe that I'd pay more than 250 for one in FAIR to GOOD working order. A pristine unit with good tubes and in the wood case...maybe a hundred more. But that's just me.

I sold mine here in Korea for about 400 in only less than fair condition(needed tweaking and a hell of a good cleaning- case was beat up). Oh but mine was the Citation One...I don't know how different they are.

This is just my opinion, someone else may have a considerably different opinion about their value.

There's a Citation IV auction on Yahoo

it's in the audio section - search for "tube". last time I looked it
was $50. I think the seller is completely unaware of its value to
us tube-aholics.

I would probably buy just to blueprint the parts with today's
components. But I don't have enough time to do the HK any justice.
