Help buying NEW speakers

I’m considering buying a new pair of speakers. Klipsch Cornwalls is what I’m aiming at, but will like to know if in that same price range I can do better. Price is 3,500 for the pair. What do you gentlemen think?

Get some khorns if Klipsch is your bag. I have Fortes and I've said it many times, they changed the way I listen to music.

This would be my first quality speakers; I’m upgrading form kabuki speakers. Indeed it is a great investment for me so that is why I’m trying to figure out all options. Khorns are out of the question or out of my league since a pair of brand new cost 9,000 and shipping to my country for a vintage pair is too expensive. I was thinking maybe TANNOY would be a good option; don’t know about the price though.

Thank you

I'd look for a very nice pair used.. let the one who bought them new take the depreciation hit on them. You could get an incredible pair for under a grand.

hello similost

Maybe I didn’t make myself clear. I’m planning on buying the cronwalls BRAND NEW not vintage!

But thank you anyways

I caught that then edited my post... As much as I love the sound of the cornwalls, and really like new stuff, I think I'd still go for a super clean like new pair used, just because it would save you a couple grand... I can afford a new pair, but that couple grand saved could buy some pretty nice tubes to run them on..

Thats good advice.

But let me explain a bit further:

I´ve been looking for vintage speakers in my country for more than 6 months already with little or no luck. So far I’ve encounter many kabuki speakers (of which I got kenwood KL888D) many JBL L100, a couple of INFINITY KAPPA 6 and 7 but the polydomes midranges seemed too messed up in both, Dahlquist DQ-28 with blown tweeter, ALTEC model 1 and 3, Goodmans Axiom 201 drivers, a JBL 4313 (I snoozed and lost!)… So you see I haven’t encounter something that is in mint condition (must be minty since I don’t really know about electronics or soldering whatsoever) nor is highly efficient (in order to pursue tubes!). so I have come to the decision that I must become almost poor and make a big investment on a brand new speaker , there is a dealer in my country that imports klipsch heritage line speakers and that’s where I’m at.

You think I can do better for the same price maybe another brand (new)?

Thank you

OH .. DOH.. I'm so sorry.. I see now where you live. Yes, You're probably going to have to go new. I'm sure cornwalls aren't floating around there like they do here in the states.

For the money you're talking, personally, I think it would be hard to beat the Cornwalls bang for the buck.

Speakers I built.. I had some Barzilay speaker cabinets I installed a AE Lambda TD15M into, along with a BMS 4555 compression driver on a JBL wave guide, then I built an Altec Model 19 crossover that past member Zilch had redesigned... Basically a high end pro style speaker in a wife friendly enclosure.

I work for an IP law firm, and even with the break I'd get, I don't think it's worth the effort... Great sounding speakers, but hardly worth the investment... My wife thankfully put up with the investment, but not quietly... THey were built on the econowave idea, but FAR from econo...

Listen to some Tannoys if you can IMO, they are every bit as dynamic as the Klipschs but less shrill sounding IMO.

hello barredowl

Do you have any suggestions on what model or line of tannoy speakers would be in the same range price of 3,500 ?

Thanks

I don't know the answer to that, but I heard these Tannoys in a cafe, not optimally placed, and they had good bass, smooth throughout. Forgot the model designation.

Yeah looks like you don't have the variety we enjoy here.New Cornwalls ? So They will be the Cornwall III's can't go wrong with them really. It seems you don't get too many of the upper echelon speakers there Altec model 1-3 ?

If you can get a pair of Altec 19's shipped there you could do that for alot under $3500.There is a pair in Hawaii now on eBay I think that would work for you.

I own Cornwall II's and have been very pleased with them after a couple tweaks. But the 19's are the best sounding IMHO. YMMV

They are claimed to half power (-3dB) around 35Hz.
Not quite - since they claim +/- 3dB 34-20k, it could be -6dB at 34. It's generally a safe bet that Klipsch is pretty generous with their specs. I'd guess it starts rolling off 45-50Hz, but I definitely don't know.
