Hey guys I need an id so I can re-foam these bad boys. I picked them up this morning at my local thrift store and they work perfect! I hope there are some advent fans out there! Any info on these would be great!

Nice find!

Those look to be the New Large Advent in the Utility cabs. A refoam and you might consider updating the caps and they will sing beautifully. I have the same in the Bullnose cabs and love them.

+1 with Audio Fan! NLAs. Snagged a pair from my local thrift store a couple of months ago - refoamed them, re-did the crossovers, cleaned up the cabinets and re-did the grills with new grill cloth from Carl's Loudspeakers. They do sound pretty good...

Definitely one of the easiest woofers to refoam. Those are great sounding speakers in comparison to a lot of the others out there. But, like any speakers/equipment, some love 'em, some don't. I had a pair for a couple of years (along with The Small Advent) but they were sold off before I moved from Texas 2.5 years ago. Just couldn't move it all with me.

Yes, I had a pair exactly like these, too. Refoamed them and re-capped the crossovers. Sound just fine.

It's also recommended after the refoam that you put them back in upside down, from the way found. This (supposedly) helps with the Spider, keeps it from sagging.

Thanks for the quick responses. That link said that this line had built in amps. Is this true? I have never had any speaker with that option before.

The reversed surround applies to the early Advent driver with the Masonite ring. The ones in the photo do not appear to have the Masonite ring, in which case the roll faces outward in the conventional manner. Reversing the surround where it was not intended will put your cone in the incorrect resting position, much like having a high DC offset from your amplifier.

No no...don't refoam inside out...place the refoamed drivers back in the cabinets upside down in relation to how you found them.

Since gravity has been pulling the spider downward for 30+ years...

See?

he meant reinstall the entire driver upside down to counteract the 30 years of spider sag they have currently.

as far as refoam kits, Rick Cobb, John from Msound, GordonW on the board can all get you what you need

Sorry, my misunderstanding of the way that was presented. I now understand what was meant. Thanks for clarifying that. I thought he meant to reverse the surround, which is not a good idea.

I decided to take these to my local speaker guru. It only costs me about $8 more than the kit and he usually has them done the same day! Its better than waiting for the kit and then doing it myself..

Nice grab. Do you have any pics of the cabinets showing condition? Are they vinyl or real veneer?

Model: U3
These came with a sticker on the back with the model and serial numbers.probably fell off. Looks like the 'new large advent' With 'red fried egg tweeter' made shortly after henry kloss left the company.
Great for jazz, classical, blues. Okay for rock.
