HK A 402 a HK730 minus tuner?

Yup, pretty much identical. You can download both service manuals and compare. The A-402 has a tone bypass function (iirc) and has the meter circuitry.

I have 3 A 402's and one of the companion tuners......the T403. This is a great combination! The amp section of the HK 730 receiver and the A 402 int. amp are the same. There are a few more tone control and tricks on the 402 that aren't on the 730 and of course those cool lights! I had 2 of the 402's and the 403 tuner hooked to a 2 pair of (stacked) Advents. I used one preamp to control both. That is one of the best sounds I have ever personally experienced. I have since replaced the two 402's with a Sansui 8080DB. It is nice but not quite as nice as the dual 402's. The dual power supplies in these amps are special. They never starve for power and the dynamic range is what makes the difference. Good Luck!
