Hot Dogs

One dog I've not been impressed with is Vienna brand bought in stores. And their Hot Dog Peppers are total ass, as hard as rocks, you need a hacksaw to cut them. Surely not the same as what Chicago stands get.

I know this stuff is popular up north but I found it disgusting. I'll take some raw chopped Vidalias any day. Don't live that far from Toombs County Ga. which has the right soil for Vidalias. A fresh one out of the field is so sweet you can eat it like an apple.

Found some of these at Walmart and couldn't help but wonder what a $10 pack of hotdogs tasted like so I took a risk. Maybe the best Hotdogs I ever had. Will be trying again.

Publix dogs, on Publix buns with you guessed it Publix sweet coleslaw and Publix Mexican blend shredded cheese, the chili is Hormel without beans. Put cheese on the dog before and after the chili. Had a small bag of Lay's potato chips on the side.

Yeah, Those bright red/bright pink hot dogs are really popular in Maine. I'd kill for a pack right now with some top-split buns and some Moxie!
That being said, my go to, if I'm at Coney Island, is a Sabrette Natural Casing with either mustard and sauerkraut or onion sauce at Paul's Daughter on the Boardwalk.

Same toppings if I'm at the original Nathan's at the corner of Surf and Stillwell.

Never had the Wimmer's brand, but Wimmer's also makes the Ambassador wieners which are one of my faves, perhaps most favorite commercial brand, anyway.

Never seen Wimmers or Ambassadors in any walmarts I've ever been in. Seems like one of the parent companies is Land O'Frost, and of course I see tons of that stuff at basically all of them.

Best Wieners-Franks I ever ate in my life were once made by Johnsonville. They were smoked Frankfurters, and natural casing, all connected in bulk, not pre-packaged, used to buy them in the Sheboygan Area in many of the smaller Stores.

Sadly, they've been long gone, maybe 25 years or more. They did once come back shortly with a "Butcher Shop" branded Wiener, they weren't bad, but was a short lived product.

The snap, and the flavor were truly great! We used to sit around at night around a little campfire, cooler with some cold ones, skewer these babies up and cook them right over the fire, eat them straight up.

By comparison, dogs made by the likes of any other commercial brands like nathans, hebrew national, ball park, vienna, dietz-watson, etc were about the equivalent of eating bar-s.

Sheboygan of course was reknown for many great butchers and sausage makers, German heritage. There's still a little bit left, but nothing like the olden days. Most those folks are now dead.

One Meat Market that does a good job keeping up with the old heritage up there is Miesfelds.
Great selection of good meats, and lots of different Sausage-Brats they make.

According to the song, Sheboygan is the greatest little town in the world. So be sure and mention my name there.

The Shop-Rite supermarkets around here sell the Black Bear brand, recently voted "Best Store Brand Hot Dogs". They were pretty tasty, good snap, etc. Last week, spotted some I hadn`t seen before....quite large (about twice the normal size), in a "Club Pack", but they were around $15, I figured that would bust the already strained budget, they`ll have to wait `til another time.

I also like Costco's Kirkland Signature hot dogs. Presently, my favorite dog without a casing. Nice size, decently seasoned/not bland, firm enough bite yet not chewy.

Columbus, Georgia has something I've not see anywhere before. It's called the scrambled dog featuring a chili style that dates back to 1940. There are no eggs in this concoction and the hotdogs are cut up and submerged in chili. Can't tell if there's a bun in there or not. Here it is in all it's glory.
