How to clean a tuner (analog)

Not enough info. It seems to have a lubricant in it, so you might be able to use a tiny amount as a preservative AFTER cleaning with a non - residue cleaner.

Yes, I did it: a small drop where those brass pieces make contact with the case. That's it. But not on the screws in the front side, cause they might loose a bit??

Those "screws" on the front side are trim cap adjustments. NEVER put anything on them with oil in it, or you will detune them and they will continually drift. It's ok to clean them with alcohol if they are touchy when you go to adjust them. If you don't know how to adjust them, leave them alone.
 
Hi all,
What to do if you have just picked up a tuner that is really dirty inside and a can of pressurized air won't do the job? Should you buy a ton of Q-tips and work on and around every single component on the print and wipe every single little cable? I like to have my gear clean and look as new as possible (and not smelly). Is there a product that you can safely spray over everything?

There are a number of really good electronic spray chassis cleaners. Blue Wash is the one I have always used, Caig also makes a number of them. But in the end I really like Spray Lysol. 90 plus percent alcohol, disinfects, and dries fast without leaving a residue behind. Don't use anything but Lysol spray others leave behind a residue.

I have a similar case on my hands and wondered where to start, bar holding it under a tap, as I saw one french guy (joker?) explain on the web.
When spraying the suggested alcohol, should I cover the varicap and the tops of those square coil housings etc?

No, that's the beauty of 99% alcohol, it will just evaporate.
 
Can i use 100% aceton to clean variable capacitor? I have tried blow the dust of and vacuum it but there is still some left.

Acetone is nasty stuff. It won't hurt the tuner but it might hurt you. Use alcohol on a Q-tip to scrub the crud away.

Some of that looks like corrosion, but it might just be the old anti - corrosion grease with dirt in it. Go to the hardware store or drug store and buy 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol. Use that with a tooth brush. If you must use acetone, do it outside with plenty of ventillation and allow the unit to dry completely before bringing it inside. And don't let it drip on any of the components, I don't know what it will do to them.

Well, i used one q-tip and acetone in outside. Its now much cleaner but its off like 0.5Mhz, not a big problem for me.

There is a trim cap on the tuner that adjusts the frequency. It will be one of the outside trim caps. To find out which one, put your finger on it. The one that massively detunes the station is the one you want. Simply tune to a known station at the top end of the dial and tweak the cap with a non metallic tool until the station comes in at the correct place on the dial.
 
Hi Guys Im New here, i just got an old hk 330c, i sprayed all the pots with deoxit d5 and being a noob i also sprayed the tuner. I turned it on and the reception seems worse, what should i do to get the deoxit off of it?
the deoxit fixed everything else and the reciever sounds really good except for the fm part.

Isopropyl alcohol can remove the residue from the cleaner, but will also remove what (if anything) was left of the lubricant at the VC shaft end and center support bearings. If you have the VC clean and fully dry, lunricant can be applied to the shaft bearings,m gears, and stop plate of the mechanism.
 
The biggest mistake people make with DeOxit is the use of the spray version. You end up wasting most of it where it isn't needed, and it is too expensive to waste. I have the spray version, of course, but I rarely use it my favorite is the needle applicator. With the needle applicator you can put 100% DeOxit just the right amount where it is needed, nothing is wasted. The brush applicator is great where you need little more in a wider application such as edge connectors on circuit boards, large ribbon cables, RCA plugs and Jacks etc. You may not seem like you are getting much for the price but believe me because you are not wasting any it lasts a long, long time.:yes:

tuner cleaning

I agree with Dr Audio and will ad a few anal procedures I use due to static electricity. Make sure the unit is unplugged, ground the chassis and I use a spray bottle of water, spray on the floor where I'm standing to ground me. Also I ground myself. This will insure when one touches the tuning capacitor everything is grounded. Don't touch main filter capacitors and you will be fine. I have seen from my finger tips a static charge to a tuner and it may cause havic with the tuner. By doing these simple precautions you can be certain not to throw off the tuner alignment. Extremely dry (low humidity) is where these tips will help the most.
