How Would You Explain The Sound Of Your System To Another Enthusiast ?

Some systems are flashy and sparkly, like looking at the surface of water waves on a sunny day.

Other systems are soothing but blurry, like opening your eyes under water.

My system is like sitting in a glass-bottomed boat in clear water, and watching the dolphins dance, 80 feet down.

:music:

If you close your eyes and listen for a half hour you might get a better evaluation of your system overall sound.

1 is it clear?
2 Is it well balanced with music?
3 Is there an even amount of bass and treble?
3 Are cymbals clean sounding?
4 Does the low bass drum move your furniture and do you feel it in your chest?
5 Does it sound good if you make it louder?
6 Does it sound "musical"?
7 Does the music overcome other sounds like LP noises or a vent fan?
8 Do you hear other noises like tape hiss, buzzing or hum?
9 Are the channels equal in sound pressure levels?
10 Can you pinpoint instruments on a stage spread?

I just thought these up but I am sure other folks can be more descriptive than I.
There must be some other measurement yardsticks to list here.
Using the first three can really describe a poor sound system. I have heard some sound system that are very awful.
Very easy to hear bad if you listen for it.
I recently went to a concert by our city symphony orchestra. It was definitely awful.
Not enough speakers to cover the outside theater. So they cranked it up the 2 stacks only to create so much ringing and distortion as to be painful.
Obviously the audio tech. guys didn't know much about applying a sound system to it's best use.

When are you gonna get some speakers for that rig ???? :)

Hi,

To a fellow enthusiast there is generally no need. It does what it does
very well balanced, and though it might be not what they want, they
generally agree its a remarkably coherent sound presentation.

All enthusiasts seem to appreciate the balance of my relatively
modest system, it makes accurate and nice sounds, and TBH
is pretty much a killer relatively budget system.

rgds, sreten.

To friend. "Imagine a camel filled with whipped cream, then having someone hit the camel on the side with a baseball bat".
I think you can only describe what you hear, and not someone else would. My 58 year old ears don't process sound frequencies the same as a 35 year old. So the upper frequency range may be great to me but harsh to others.

Trying to explain how music from a hi fi sounds in words is like trying to explain how an orgasm feels with words. I will leave that up to novel authors, poets, audio equipment ads and stereo reviewers.

I'm not going to say it's the best you ever heard, but I guaran-damn-tee it's the best you've heard since the last time you heard anything better....

Aha! Trick question.

An "enthusiast" would know what it sounds like from the gear list. Only amateurs need to listen to a system to know how it sounds.

I wouldn't bother to explain period! It's for me and moi alone to love it and that's all that really matters now isn't it:)
