Hurricane Hilary - SoCal Takes a Rare Hit

The Other Ridiculous Part of Weather Broadcasts

Our local news is 30 minutes long. 10 minutes of that is commercials, which leaves 20 minutes for news. Of that 20 minutes, the weather lady consumes about 15 minutes broken into three segments: They lead with the weather, then 2 minutes later, they have the "full weather report," and then at the end of the broadcast is "the weather wrap up!"

On 99% of the days in this region, it would be a complete forecast to say, "Temps will be X, and the wind will be Y." That will hold for all of the 20 cities in our area. But no! They have to say, "98 in Indio, 97 in Cathedral City, 99 in Palm Springs, 96 in Palm Desert, etc, etc." Do people decide not to go to a neighboring city if the temperature is 2 degrees lower or higher than where they live?

The weather guy, person, went from being a meteorologist to being 'talent'.

Exactly, during a hurricane or some such the dudes bravely out in the field are usually pretty fit, in some cases muscular arms ensconced in tight fitting shirts are on display "leaning" into the wind or bundled up in hi tech rain gear.

Check out this nonsense

My experience is most of those internet weather reporting deals are pretty much useless. Frequently they seem to be inaccurate (I have no idea where they're getting their info).

I've been using this for years and it's pretty good. Scroll down some and click on Hourly Weather Forecast for some good info.

Just punch your zip code of city in the box, upper left. https://www.weather.gov/

I’m in west Los Angeles. Currently sitting in my backyard under an awning and enjoying the rain: it’s coming down steadily but not very hard. Of course that may change. It’s warm and very humid

First things first, here's hoping whatever transpires weather wise that you all stay safe and fingers crossed not too much damage, flooding etc.

"Weather" is BIG business with FEAR mongering as its sole basis with the Weather Channel being the major purveyor and local affiliates following suit.

One of the local affiliates goes by "Severe Weather Team 11"

We get all 4 seasons in my neck of the woods and it's comical sometimes when local forecasts are given.

Several years back both nationally and locally they started using the term "Polar Vortex" it sounded/sounds ominous and I remember folks breathlessly talking about it and that it's supposed to be really bad.

Then a funny thing happened a well respected, retired local meteorologist with 30yr+ under his belt was interviewed and said basically it was nonsense as it's whats known and had been known for decades as a "Cold Front" the jet stream dips, colder Canadian maybe even Artic Polar air follows.

Some other ones I get a chuckle out of are "Bomb Cyclones" which usually occur in Winter along North Eastern coast. They used to be called Nor'Easters
Well here in New England they're still referred to as Nor'Easters but if the storm meets bombogenisis criteria the airwaves are typically littered with that term, bomb cyclone.

Good luck out there. Tie down what you can't bring inside although once well inland the winds should be relatively calm. Been there, done that.

That`s been my sole WX. info. source since becoming available via the internet, and prior my daily use of the local NWS`s NOAH weather radio channel. since 1975.
Kind of important and very helpful for reasonably accurate WX. conditions and prediction knowledge here, especially in FL. IMO/E..

The wind was supposed to start at 10am here in San Diego, then 11am, then 12pm, now 1pm - still nothing.

The rain has been mostly light and steady, but is tapering off now.

The forecasts have been totally off for my area - even from the National Weather Service site.

My tried and tru method of determining the weather is look out a window or go outside and look up. It has never failed me..

Well maybe CA`s. weather remains more stable than FLs. does, because here it can and does change frequently over the course of the day, or even hrs. !
Summer time Thunder storms often develop suddenly over an area that is mostly clear sky and sunny, with the drop in the area`s temperature over 15 degrees in a few minutes time.
A old statement used around FL. by long time Floridians concerning the WX: Is if you don`t like the weather right now ? well just wait a few minutes or so and it will change, but not often for the desired better !

Well. the wind has picked back up again, and, the rain is coming down a bit more steady and harder. They say that the best is yet to come. But so far, it's just a storm, nothing that special, except it being mid-late summer.

rain, so far: .75 -> .8" or so.

Yes, being a peninsula and such but sensationalizing of the weather has become the norm for many places. 'They' seem disappointed when nothing actually happens, like a slow weather and news day is such a bummer, no devastation to report, sometimes they get creative after or during the non event.

I used to live in Southern Arizona, Ft. Huachuca and I've seen it violently rain on one side of the street while the other was bright and sunny. The desert up against the Huachuca Mountains, very exciting, intense lightening, zap, pop, thunder all at the same time, in a few minutes it'd be as nothing happened.

Southern California weather reporting used to be very very good... sixties through mid eighties, if they said two weeks of rain starting in four days, it rained for two weeks starting in four days, if they said heavy fog for the next couple of weeks there was heavy fog for the next couple weeks, one could count on it. I haven't lived there for a number of years but the reliability of weather forecasts dropped dramatically in a realitively short period of time, seems like in the late eighties, and that with more satelites and monitoring stations. I don't know, something changed... and it's true, they used to have actual meteorologists, suit and tie, then the talent appeared and those guys were out.
