I HATE deer

Be thankful you didn't hit one of our road pests.1000 plus pounds of moose can ruin your week real fast .I live 5 minutes from Michigan so im no stranger to seeing tons of deer .
 
Moose bears around here too & deer in the south. I had a smiling bear (he figured he could beat me)) run in front of me on the hwy and he was so close to my 74 3/4 T GMC I couldn't see him over the hood. LOL!

If I fix the truck, I'll probably convert it to use the '86 and up grille, headlight trim, header panel, and bumper. Most of those parts are available new, and what isn't, I can get used a lot easier. I know where some of those parts were. Aftermarket fenders are readily available new and are the same for many years. While I'm at it, the same yard had a way nicer back bumper than mine, too.

Back in the day, one of my classmates got hit by a deer coming home from BB practice--it literally jumped off a hillside and landed on the hood and windshield of the car--not a scratch on the front clip, but holes in the hood (from hooves) and a smashed out windshield. I know the drill well--look for those beady glowing eyes after dark.

I've heard of people being killed that way.

I didn't see it at first because it was in the passing lane, which I was not in because I wasn't passing (unlike some idiots:rolleyes:), and it was running the same direction I was going. By the time it turned towards me, I couldn't do anything about it.:oops:

I know--it just happens. The f**ked up thing is that if you swerve to miss it (successfully), and end up off the road or into a tree, the accident is your fault--your insurance goes up and the cops write you a ticket for "failure to control". My buddy got that for hitting a parked car while missing a cat. :oops:

I speak from experience that the offshore made repair parts for trucks, aint exact fits. You need an english wheel, persuasion and luck to get a line up. go for used. I just painted and installed the bumper fill panels on my 78 olds I got from the PO. they paid like $240 for them. JUNK. modifications galore and gentle bending with a hair dryer on full.....

Having worked in a body shop and done some work on my own, I know. Some parts are pretty good and fit decently. Some are horrible. I've seen some OEM parts that fit horribly too, so it's a crap shoot either way. Finding used fenders for something this old is nearly impossible in this part of the country, thanks to the **** they dump on our roads and the fact that that junkyards are crush happy.

I just got back from getting an estimate. Not good. For one thing, I didn't realize/wasn't told that we had a $1000 deductible.:no: That's going to get changed pronto. It's right on the borderline of being totaled. He didn't even send the paperwork in. He said call the insurance company first and tell them I don't want it totaled, because I won't get squat out of it. By the time all is said and done, I'll be luck if I get a little over $600 out of them for the repairs.:mad: Barely enough to cover parts. My luck blows.

I try not to swerve at all. I'd rather kill an animal, especially if it's small vermin, than run off the road and possibly hurt/kill myself or someone else.
 
That sucks....I was towing a 2 place in line snowmobile trailer in the up ....we were doing 75 mph....dumb deer jumped rite in front of us....somehow I wheeled around the damn thing saw my trailer next to me and wound up going straight in my lane....it was snowing to beat the band....the look on the deers face was priceless .
 
Just glad you're OK, which might not have been the case in something smaller. I know someone who ended up with one in the back seat of a full sized American sedan; alive and kicking. Good luck fixing up the truck. Looks like it has plenty of character.
