I ruined some nice knobs! Anybody know how to resurrect them?

The plan is to filch the knobs off of a DA-c7 that I have that is pretty rough. I'll put the ruined ones on the "7" and keep an eye out for replacements.

i washed the letters of a technics su-v6
it was ruined as far as i was concerned ... so i had a technics turnable for sale ... i added $25 to the price and advertised with free amp
... it was gone in a few hours :)

i am happier now any way cause i found a su-v8
 
I've polished up completely rusted axe heads to a mirror bright finish using acids, then fine abrasives, both by hand and with power tools.

In the case of a non-coated finish, it's mostly a matter of how much patience you have, and what abrasives you use.

I have used one of those "self plating" kits. They use a small battery and a brush and will electroplate the knobs for you. I think I got it at tube depot. It works okay. I replaced the battery with a DC power supply and it worked much better. Caution, increasing the voltage increases the speed of plating, but it also increases the amount of cyanide gas released during the process.
 
Second thought, I have used a company called ACME plating. They are located in Montrose Colorado. They can do nickel and brass(I believe). I have been quite pleased with their results. Maybe give them a call
 
Although it can be plated, aluminum is usually anodized. The anodizing process forms a thin coating of aluminum oxide on the surface of the part. Aluminum oxide is extremely hard. It's the typical abrasive in most sandpaper. It's also very porous and can be dyed easily, often with bright colors. It's then sealed to hold the dye. You may have inadvertently either removed the anodizing or changed the color of the dye.

There are a variety of chemical treatments to remove the anodizing to get the part back to it's aluminum base. Then they can be anodized again. It's a relatively cheap process. Goggle anodizing and see if there is a shop near you that can strip and anodize the knobs.
