OK I got an ID on them.

Modular Component System MCS series Jc Penny model #683-8226-10, 8 Ohms frequency response 35-17,000 Hz. The 10" subs are after market.

Only MCS stuff I've heard are a pair of 3 way model 8245. Loud boomy and lacking in the high end imo, though not terrible.

Whats the verdict, pass?

Oh man, I totally spaced, I have a pair similar to that! Same box type but different speakers, my only problem with the sound of them was that the bass was boomy so I had to tone it down, but if they have aftermarket woofers that might not be a problem.
If you can get them for $20 or less and they are in good shape you will have a decent set of speaks.

Many MCS speakers were OEM'd by Panasonic/Technics/Matsushita, but those don't look like it.

For cheap, I'd take them.

I have a similar pair. They are not great but they are not horrible either. For $20 or less they would be good for a spare/garage type system. I've been trying to sell mine on CL for $45 and have had no hits. Don't be fooled by the apparent dome. It is a wire screen over a paper cone mid and tweeter.

Well they're asking $40 firm plus 40 miles of gas to get there and back. Think I'll have to let em go.

I have a pair some what like those that are MCS the model number on back says 683-8225. I thought they sounded alright I was kind of surprised they didn't sound that bad. I would pass at that price myself though.
