Mystery Speakers - ID?

Maxamillion

These speakers are being offered to me for $50 - the seller says there is no ID on them and has no information about them. I think I can barely make out a whizzer cone on the woofer through the grill cloth. Any Ideas? Worth $50?

to me it seems like if you have $50 burning a hole in your pocket, and you can see yourself as reasonably DIY, then you either have a diamond in the rough or a pair of stout boxes to start a new speaker project with....

I think that's a full-range woofer for sure. Altec's maybe? Not precisely a whizzer, though. I notice there is also a cone tweeter.

My two cents - 50 bucks is not cheap for mystery speakers that look like they have been stored in damp conditions for years.

If these are local and you have the time, you might go over and check them out.

But I would pass if I saw these on my local CL and the owner had no clue on the brand.

Cheers, Snade

Looks like that little shelf with the cone tweet. Some cheap house brands did that to copy Wharfedales.

How much do they weigh?

Less than 50 lbs for 2.5 ft tall cabs is not for me for painted-over speakers.

If they are not particularly heavy for their size or fail the dull-solid sound knuckle-knock test, walk away .

Looks like a paper cone tweet and a 10-12 inch woofer with a port in the lower right. Could be a JBL, could be a panasonic :D

Tell the seller that old, worn-out speakers with no ID and no info are worth $25 (or whatever value they're worth to you). The worst he can say is no.

Thanks guys!

I'm on vacation this week in Cape Cod, but when I get back to NJ I'll offer him $25 if they are still available and seem solidly built. Thanks for all the opinions!

Hi Max,

I got to agree with Karlo, my first thought is Jensen Special Design.
Perhaps UTAH. Yea, I also agree that fifty bucks is a bit on the high side.
This past Summer, I found (Curb side) a pair of Jensen Special Design as well as a pair of UTAH of about the same size you have in you pix. Now, if the Speakers had Horns...different story. Best of luck.

Regards,
SixCats!

Could be IMF Compact II's as well... If it's them, $50 is a good price if they're OK.

EDIT: I've taken a second look and they seem to be bigger than I estimated on first sight (so they're definitely NOT Compact II's :D )
