Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner!!^^^^

Goldring Elektra. The famous “Red Ed!”

I got it right ? I had one of those. I came mounted on a Golring GR 1.2 turntable which was made by Rega for Goldring. It was a mix of the Rega P1 and P2(older versions). The whole package was $299 from Audio Advisor. The tonearm was the RB 250 which by itself sold for more than the whole package. The Goldring Elektra is a very decent cartridge. Is/was ? I don't think it is still made but not sure.

Also known as the Sanyo MG-29. Decent cartridge but nothing outstanding.

The P Mount version, MG-29P is still on the VOM site.

I ran my Elektra for 800 hours; dulled 2 styli. I had the Shure M97xE also. I preferred the Elektra. I had a NAD 9300 with no stylus, had it since new in 1981. Also had the V15-RS, bought new in 1998, no stylus. I bought the Elektra and M97xE as a packaged deal, both new/sealed, on eBay in 2007 for $60, so I could play my records again. At that time. I didn’t know how to get styli for either the Shure or NAD. It was years later and a lot of research before I found styli.

Today, for the money, there are better cartridges. The AT VM95 and 3600L are 2, IMO. The Vessel, Sumiko Pearl also.

Thanks very much! This cartridge came in a set of various others that I received with my AR XB table that I just bought.

The other cartridges are:
  • Shure V15 Type III,
  • Shure M192,
  • Shure PRM92,
  • Shure M91ED (with yellow "HI TRACK" stylus),
  • ADC XLM MkII Improved,
  • Audio Technica PB 11E
I assume the best of these is the V15 Type III?

That’s really subjective. I like the ADC over the V15 III. Someone else will like something different, or agree.

Hi JJ, you might be cautious in terms of what records you decide to play to "try" them out.....unless you have more information about all of these carts as far as how many hours they have on them, I'd not play any of my better stuff with any of them. A quick glance suggests you might find replacement styli for most if not all of them and for not a ton of $$$ either.

The ADC XLM is excellent too. I am not familiar with that Audio Technica but someone else will be.
I have a mint AR 77-XB. Wonderful little turntable. Can hang with the best of them.

Shure V15III and the M91ED are very good high compliance carts. Best with your XB.

Can anyone identify this cartridge? No markings at all that I can see.
The needle is a Pfanstiehl ST-29D or DE, the cartridge is either a Goldring or Sanyo MG-29 aka 'Red Ed'. The easiest way to tell them apart is by removing the needle....there's a magnet tucked in the body above the needle in the Goldring, which is absent in the MG-29. The Goldring needles are silkscreened with the Goldring name and are of better quality, as is the cartridge body itself. The Goldring needles will work in the Sanyo bodies and vise versa, but the higher quality commands a higher price and rightfully so as they do sound more refined.

Am I just imagining things or did the elliptical version of the stylus not have a white dot on it somewhere? I remember some with it. Maybe that was in Red Ed times.
