IE Security Threat!

My M$ IE Just auto updated . My Win7 x64 PC just shut down and re - started and configured updates @ 0945 PDT without my intervention while I was on the web ! that may not be the case for others depending on your update settings and Win OS so a manual check/update might be prudent.
Fortunately I was not doing anything critical that needed to be saved Chrome (the daily driver here) re opened the same browser tabs after the brief interruption so
it was smooth sailing here YMMV. That's one way to get an update out!

M$ included Win XP in today's patch BTW.
These things will happen again so upgrading from XP is still prudent
outside of the enterprize where XP support remains available.
This stuff can probably happen with any browser or OS in any event it's best to have a supported OS .

The update/patch is an IE browser patch released for IE 6 through 11 I believe and Windows XP through 8.xx

I had it off last night (I usually leave it on )
It auto updated and auto restarted about 30 minutes after log on.

Good of M$ to include XP! I'll have to spin up the other PC's here and make sure they get the update

Oh just to make sure ........... I just checked the update history and todays IE 11 important security update dated 05/02 was indeed installed automatically as described above.

I have automatic updates enabled . M$ included an MSE security update along with today's IE patch as well possibly related or not.

And if If you don't somebody else may install a key logger ,read your e- mail, Hi jack your online and or banking accts ,access your information , or remotely use your computer without your consent or knowledge for purposes that can have rather unpleasant consequences. I've seen it happen now and again and cleaned up a few PC's for folks . (at that point a format ,zero the drive and clean install )

I've done many clean installs of windows and the very first thing is to enable an antivirus either MSE or something then just leave it connected to MS update overnight or a few hrs as needed and have a coke !

I let the Security Update run this morning, downloaded and installed itself, no shutdown or restart. :scratch2:

Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2964358)

Installation date: ‎5/‎3/‎2014 8:29 AM

Installation status: Successful

You can always re boot it to make sure but it sounds like you have it covered ,KB2964358 is defiantly an out of hand security patch for
IE x.x on win XPSP3.

ofc sometimes widows waits a while to prompt a re start☺.

OTOH the re start may have been called for ( on my system win7 x64 ) by the other (possibly unrelated ) MSE security update my system received at the same time..the other 7 x64 box here re started as well .Or maybe the XP patch doesn't need a re start .

EMERGENCY PATCH FOR CRITICAL IE 0-DAY THROWS LIFELINE TO XP LAGGARDS, TOO
Update comes as in-the-wild attacks get meaner, target XP for first time.

THE XPOCALYPSE IS UPON US: WINDOWS XP SUPPORT HAS ENDED
Without patches, it's inevitable that systems are going to get pwned.
Explaining its actions, Microsoft says that this patch is an "exception" because of the "proximity to the end of support for Windows XP."
The decision to release this patch is a mistake, and the rationale for doing so is inadequate.

A one-off patch of this kind makes no meaningful difference to the security of a platform. Internet Explorer received security patches in 11 of the last 12 Patch Tuesdays. Other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox receive security updates on a comparable frequency.

the option Microsoft took is the worst of all worlds. It undermines efforts by IT staff to ditch the ancient operating system, and undermines Microsoft's assertion that Windows XP isn't supported, while doing nothing to meaningfully improve the security of Windows XP users. The upside? It buys those users at best a few extra days of improved security. It's hard to say how that was possibly worth it.

People using Windows XP are going to be exploited through known but unpatched vulnerabilities. That is what the end of support means. That is its unavoidable consequence. For as long as Windows XP has a substantial number of users, there will be calls for "one more patch" to be released. There's nothing special about this latest flaw that warrants special treatment, and the next weeks and months will see the disclosure and exploitation of many more similar flaws. If this bug was fixed, all those bugs should get fixed, too.

The term XPOCALYPSE used is very creative
I'm using Win7 x64 and IE 11 on 3 boxes here with Chrome being the daily driver latest IE patches are installed ofc .
Pretty good article I just thought I would put it up here.

Please, do you have the link to that upgrade for Windows XP users; because it has to be done manually from what I understand?
I searched everywhere, even on Microsoft's own website but to no avail. - I must be doing some' wrong.

I just hate it, this entire episode! ...IE, Microsoft's security issues, ...my heart is bleeding inside and my Windows experience is no more fun; I'm seriously thinking at switching over to Apple's OS.

Most viruses that's how you get them; by upgrading. ...Nothing's new with that; that's the way it works in audio as well. :)

Are you a computer tech? ...And what MSE stands for?

Which free anti-virus do you recommend, and should you run it in sync with Windows Defender?

Plus, should we get Malware protection, and which one (a free one)?

Thank you.

Good news is Apple upgrades the OS every few years .... for free!..... Bad news is ...... it usually requires all new hardware well a new laptop or desktop anyway !eer maybe a new Trashcan ☺

IE x.x security patch for windows XPSP3
right here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42591

You can do it with Windows update also small file we are talking megabytes

I would think about migrating to win 7 or 8.1x This vulnerability has been in the wild for a couple of years so they say. but now that it's been published
and XP is at EOL and soon to be without security patches it's time to move on because black hats all over the globe are going to be trying to hack XP
for whatever vulnerabilities show up next week after this one has been patched .

OTOH M$ has supported XP to home users at no charge for ~13 yrs
Nobody does that Not Apple ,(although they do provide free upgrades the kicker is their upgrades usually require new hardware just like the last one!) lotta pissed off Mac pro folks out there! ever see anyone with an old mac that actually used it ....... on line?

Linux LTS (long term support ) It's free ,upgrades are free and it works very good after *some learning curve. Official support is 5 yrs for Linux and it will run on anything including a Coke machine! . Oh Apple OS are nix based also! maybe that's why they work well !

Nobody supports an OS for 13 yrs for free ! ... so really M$ is not the villain here!
If XP didn't work so well ya all wouldn't be still using it☺

Trust me Win 7 and 8 are better! You can probably run 7 x32 on a P4 or Athlon 64 I've installed it on an Athlon 64 x2 3800 for someone not the fastest way to run win 7 x32 but it worked !

OTOH Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS would run a lot faster
on those boxes muy bueno !You have to see it to believe it and it wouldn't be an unreasonable alternative. Lots of Free very good software avail even some MS office /word/excel etc compatible stuff there, Media browsers you name it they have it! .(free on line software store Imagine that!) .............. and official support until ~2019! then a newer free version !
Oh Linux comes with Firefox pre installed lots of other stuff also !
This box is a dual boot configuration it runs Win 7 x64 or Linux Ubuntu ! other distros are out there too! but Ubuntu would have the most support!

MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials

You should run only one AV/malware resident program. As-needed scanners (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, etc.) are a different matter. Not a bad plan to have a couple different ones like that to run every now and then, plus one online like BitDefender.

I use MSE as the resident AV/malware program. Seems to work fine. Is it the best? Probably not, but it works for me. And, generally speaking, I know how to keep my nose clean which is about 90% of the battle anyway.

Personally I like Chrome
.....I love Chrome....my tower was unusable two years ago because of it's slowness with IE....then my daughter installed Chrome for me....I tab favorites across the top, and can jump back and forth between them....auto spell-check with underlining red virtually "wherever you are"....honestly, if it wasn't for Chrome, I would have had to purchase a new tower two years ago.....

MSE is free (not the best but better than nothing) Contrary to popular wisdom I run 2 AV programs on 2 of my 7x64 boxes , Avast (free) and MSE on one PC and AVG (free) and MSE on another PC . Some folks over at C net do that now too! although it defy's convention.

Chrome is the daily driver here nothing wrong with Firefox though. I've been using Chrome since it came out because I was impressed with the search engine before they had a browser it was a no brainer! . I'm not a fan of IE11.... although it is light years ahead of older IE versions .... it could be more stable IMO and is like wearing a big bulls eye on line .

I set mutual exclusions in each program although they run fine without doing that, I've done it with the old defender and later MSE on XP,Vista and 7 x64 for years now no conflicts and good protection !

Avast free or AVG free are both very and basically equally very good they work better than many over bloated paid security suites ,Avast is more user friendly but AVG is fine . I have the option of free McAfee premium security suite from my ISP for at least 3 PC's
don't want it don't need it Used it in the past major Bloatware ! it's almost as bad a virus by itself!

If I were to only run one AV program on win 7 I would uninstall MSE and choose Avast or AVG free.

On win 8.xx you either run MSE or or something else you can't have 2 ☻

On win 8. I would then uninstall MSE and choose AVG or Avast they are way better than MSE. ☺ Just my 2¢

MSE is what I use, everything else seems to really slow down the system. I trust that Microsoft is going to protect their product better than a company that makes $ "protecting" a computer. I can see a company making viruses then selling you the fix. Tin foil hat stuff I know, but they're in the for the cash.

I've seen MSE stop stuff, heck I watched it clean a bug from me going to my counties web site......twice in a row just to check they had really been hacked. Watched it clean stuff from Google searches when the results take you where you hadn't planned to visit. It's everywhere and it's gonna happen no matter what you do.

I keep my stuff in one or two main folders on the desktop. If I get a virus somehow, seems to be every couple of years, I just throw them on a disc, reload the computer fresh and start new. Drag the folders of the disk back to the new desktop. Should probably do that anyway just clean out the crap, like changing oil.

I just looked in Procman and Avast free is using .02 CPU
and 41K ram that's considerably less than ONE Chrome browser tab ! You might want to re visit that just saying .

Avast (free) is pretty lite same for (AVG free) I've seen both AVG and Avast free stop or quarantine things MSE couldn't see! maybe that's why I don't get viruses ....not to say that AVG and Avast don't find and block or quarantine things occasionally that's what they are supposed to do! M$ will be the first to tell you MSE is just barely better than nothing by their own admission ☺.

OTOH nothing Short of Handbrake on high settings slows this thing down or my Intel box . Even then with all the cores burning 100% afterburner they still don't noticeably slow down for net surfing or something else at the same time even playing an HD video at the same time .

They use MSE as a baseline (meaning Zero the very bottom! )when testing /comparing other AV programs and suites that should tell anyone all they need to know!
It's just not up to the job today even m$ will be the first tell you that it's a better than nothing choice at best that's about all even by M$ own admission. Good of them to include something though.

Not a good idea to assume M$ does threat detection any better than Kapersky,AVG,Avast,Norton ,etc (It's been independently verified over and over they do not!) and also by their own admission .......remember M$ wrote all the code full of holes and vulnerabilities the hackers love so much ......... think about it!

Something like Avast or AVG free should not slow anything down unless it's really CPU challenged or has other issues .I used to run it on ancient P4's and athlon 64's when those and XP and were the thing .

Recently I put Avast free on an ancient Sempron single core windows XP box for someone who just net surfs it ran fine ........ well as fine as it could anyway but Avast wasn't slowing it down ...........Now Crapafee that'a another another story! I avoid that like the plague and I can get their premium suite free from my isp.

Security suites in general are bloated and resource hungry better to run a standalone AV program like AVG or Avast Free without the bloatware and get a comparable level of threat detection for nothing! Don't forget weekly scans with free Malewarbytes

You do know that the Windows desktop itself is nothing more than a folder? ☺

I hope you aren't putting your applications all in desktop folders rather than just using shortcuts on the desktop
that might be an issue .
