I have no idea. I was just assuming that since the whole point of the exercise was to make them identical, that he would be smart enough to make it so.
It sounds like there was actually no switch at all. Just a half second break, and two lights.
"the audio source was looped through the switcher only so it could insert the ½ second of silence during the changeover. There was no “A” and “B”. There was absolutely no change in the audio circuitry or equipment during the entire listening session"
With different speakers reacting differently to room loading and acoustics even if you did set the levels to be the same say at 700 HZ what you choose to be the best may not work for you in your space at home. Especially with point source speakers that are so sensitive to the room and their placement in the room. I haven't mentioned how you switch and balance the two have I?
I would use a separate identical amplifier for each speaker pair with input volume controls to balance them at which ever frequency or band of pink noise you choose. And then if the preamp has a remote to select different outputs use that to select the appropriate speaker. You just don't let the person know which button selects which speaker. Of course you need a sound level meter with filtering or a real time analyzer to set the levels to make it fair. With the analyzer you can move the speakers around a bit to get the best frequency response, too.
You might put up a thin curtain that is front lit only to blank out all physical seeing clues, too. The ear can be very directional when used in conjunction with the eyes in making an unwise choice. It's about the sound only. Nothing more nothing less.
I drove 750 miles to Houston one time to make the choice as to which speakers I wanted in 1968. Then I had to save my monies. Here's what I chose..
