Infinity Quantum 4 speakers

Ok, Just picked up the refoamed woofers. I decided to have them professionally done, I used Neal's speaker repair in colfax, ca. From what I can tell they do good work and are great to talk with. The Yamaha gets pretty warm if I turn the volume up a bit.

Good, that was one of two places that stood out to me when this thread started and I did a Google search for speaker repair near you. Looked like they are about an hour or so away from you so you wouldn't have to ship them if you wanted to make the drive.
I have similar speaker repair place an hour from me, well worth the drive rather than paying for shipping and risking damage while in transit

I've done two sets of DIY refoams and had two sets done by a pro. If I have the money I'll let a pro do it as it gives me peace of mind it will be done right and if not they should make it right. For $100 or less (cost difference between DIY and pro job) that's well worth it to me.

Hey man, great score for sure. With newer poly Watkins woofers, sweeeeet. One common thing is the woofer to be wired wrong. Solid red wire 4ohm positive. Solid black 2ohm positive. Pretty easy to put the black on negative...

I am not surprised, the Quantum's are a difficult load with the Watkins woofs. I had a set of Q5's that made most any amp I used very warm when cranking. The Q series are definitely amp killers for lesser units that can't drive 4 ohm and under loads

My Dad had the Infinity Quantum 4s back in the day. He bought them new in 1979. He said they sounded pretty good, but they were very inefficient, and needed a lot of power. He had them hooked up to a Technics SA-500 which wasn't enough.

According the the Infinity QLS-1 white paper, the Watkins dual voice coil woofer wired in conjunction with the Quantum "LCR" crossover circuit is supposed to actually flatten out the impedance maintaining a 5 ohm impedance response.
I believe the Infinity tweeter arrays(2.9 ohms) are where the impedance dips occur in the Quantum series, specifically the QLS-1.
All the Infinity's I've owned certainly suck up the juice but never have they been a danger to my amplifiers.

Perhaps amplifiers back then were not up the the task.
Like I said I'd never come across a Watkins woofered Infinity speaker that presented a tough load to an amplifier, certainly power hungry but never anything close to amp killing
I think the issue was more than likely resolved and the bad rap is fake news, imo

Go for it!
If the mids and/or EMITs are playing soft or not playing, the individual level adjustment controls might benefit from a good cleaning.

I sent you a PM about value and refoaming.

I had my Q4 woofers re-coned, as well as the mid ranges. What my concern is that the C/O pots are intermittent because of their age. I think the C/O was epoxy’d in place, so I can’t see how the pots can be cleaned or replaced. All I could think of is detach the wires an install a metal rim resistor between them. (Metal-Film resistor half the value of the pot)

It's not uncommon that a resistor is used to bypass a bad pot. Just use the correct value resistor.
I have no hands on experience with the Quantum models but quite a bit with the RS series, which was the next series after the Quantum. I did a little research a Klaus' website...http://www.infinity-classics.de/index.htm
According to the tech sheets my RMS's use the same pots (as well as the RSa's I had, and the RS II I have now) as your Q4's. I can assure you my pots were not epoxied in place in any other RS models I've owned.
Of course there could have been changes made between series'. Or a previous owner.
EDIT/ADDED after the post...it's possible they were hot glued or epoxied(???) in place, that was more often done on coils or caps but probably not unheard of with pots I suppose.
One question: were your woofers and midranges reconed or refoamed?
