JBL 4311's = system complete... for now.

It still doesn't matter. When the 50 watt pot sits on the bottom of the cabinet, they are in the positions shown. The shaft is still at the top of the existing hole. The L-pad in the right hole in the picture is sitting on the cabinet bottom, and all the way against the lower right corner. It will not go any lower. Basically, the L-Pad is too tall.

The only way it would look original would be if I used 2 x 15watt L-Pads.

But, I suspect that the 15 watt L-Pad on the mid is frowned upon.

I suppose they just don't make L-Pads like they used to.

Well, if that's all that will fit properly, I'd go that route. I believe the stock L-Pads are 10 watters. I think if you can go bigger, do so. If you can't, use what ya' can

Well, heck, I thought the stock ones would've been 50 watters. How would I be able to confirm the wattage rating of the stock L-Pads?

It's not called out on any of the schematics, and it's no longer on the parts list.

Call JBL Pro tomorrow and ask, is what I'd do.

I think they're 15W or less, too.... :dunno:

WAIT! I found it on the L220 schematic. 10285 is 10W, like Gonzo says. See the footnote here:

http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Technical Sheet/L220 ts.pdf

I remembered there was a mandatory upgrade on that schematic.... :thmbsp:

Well then, order gets put in.

Thanks a million guys!

You just saved a pair of 3112 networks from being butchered!

58450 pots

Zilch, what size is the JBL high power 58450 L-Pad? It might be obsolete anyways. Damn Adobe PDF software keeps freaking out during my ProService checks so I can't read the info :dammit:

Right-o, just a thought.... So, okay, we've managed to get the bloody pots right!:thmbsp: Let's see if we can hear some improvements  Some quick questions Zilch. What kind of improvement should we expect by plugging up the ports? Is that a temp thing, or a keeper mod? What about putting an inductor in the LF portion of the circuit? Good or what? Does the woofer's natural roll-off do a good enough job, or is there something that could be done at a later time? Curious.

Closing the port strips the boom outta the bass. It's essential for all but nearfield (no boundaries) listening. Some folks like the fake bass, and that's fine, of course. To me, it's overpowering and undesireable.

The woofer does not have a well-behaved rolloff, so adding an appropriate value inductor would be an improvement. I'm afraid I can't tell you what that value is, though. I've used mostly two-pole filters to do it, and I've never "fixed" L100s, specifically.

I'm outta my league with network design (that's why it's great to have you on board :D ), but if I may ask a newbi question: what about the other JBL 3 way bookshelf models? Is there one that closely mimics the L100/4311's basic configuration, so that one could borrow some single or 2 pole filter values? 120ti or some other model. Hey, I don't want to complicate this thread. Forgive me, but..., seems that adding another coil/cap to the mix isin't too far outta reach here. I think once these two gentlemen hear the positive improvements, and get these first steps done, the hunger for more will beg for this next mod. I love this stuff  ! This is what it's all about. Be nice if you could pursue some options.

Every time I pursue "fixing" L100s in the abstract, I end up with 4412s, which sell for half the price.

Each mod you make incrementally changes the character of L100s, and in the end, they're still not mirror-imaged, unless you're working with the original vertical-in-line ones.

Plug the ports to tame the bass, swap in 035tiA to give them some decent HF, install 104H-x to flatten the mids, rework the crossovers, and they're not L100s anymore. You can do MUCH better with the cash.

The L100t3s an AK member (Bigears) apparently got for peanuts today will bury L100s insofar as quality music reproduction is concerned.

L100s are what they are. Leave 'em be, or sell them and buy something more "mature." That's my take on the larger picture.

[I'd still plug the ports, tho.... ;) ]

Right. I figure that swapping in/out some caps/coils/pots is not nearly as overwhelming as a complete driver change. I agree, there are better choices, but that is always the case with just about anything a person owns. I'm focused on minimal upgrades for these 4311's. Great starter mods and pretty cool speakers too, for what they are. You know me Zilch, I've changed about every part of my L220/222's, so I'm with you. It would be nice to figure out the best inductor value for the woofer's. I think the rest will take care of itself

I owned some L100t's. Major improvement all around. 2214H is a kick-ass woofer! Bypassed networks too, right?

Yup, all the right stuff except mirror imaging, so I'd build new cabinets and repackage them. I got my pair for free off CL last fall.

I'm just sayin' there's considerable merit in stepping back and asking the appropriate question: "What am I trying to achieve here?"

Ok folks, got of the phone with JBL, not surprisingly, they don't carry parts for much of the 4311's or the 3112 crossover networks. What they do have is Part Number 5363 that's the foam disc that's supposed to be around the LE25 Tweeter. $2.04 compared to ~$10 on some super famous auction site.

Number is 818-894-8850
Hours are from 8-5 PST Mon-Fri, and best hours to call are from 8-12 and 2-5 PST.

Still trying to find proper L-pads. Will post later.
Interesting... Based on your information, I just got off the phone with them and the parts lady moaned that that the 4311 was a Consumer Product, leafed through her parts catalog and couldn't find any reference to either the LE25 tweeter or the 5363 part number.

She then told me to call JBL Consumer Division in New York - (516) 255-4525. After wading through their automated system (Press 1,1,3,3) the gentleman there tells me that there's no 5363 part number and that the LE25 foam tweeter rings are a discontinued product.

So, I call JBL CA again and this time talk to Tech Support (John, nice guy) who says the part number is actually 55363 and they have 700+ in stock. I get transferred back over to the lady with an attitude and she types in the number and says it's invalid and what do I want to do? (I want to tie you to a chair and slap you until I fall down!) I give up...

So it looks like I'll be buying them on eBay for twice as much, but at least they'll come with 10 times less attitude and grief...

Ask Carla to get the right part number from John.

OR, talk to Dave, instead.... ;)

Well, I saw the foam discs on the auction site, they're asking ~$20 for a pair, which would put them at 10 times the going rate from JBL.

Carla was having a bad day (or bad life.)
Thanks for the tip. Perhaps I'll invest another long distance call and try for Dave. Is Dave in Tech Support or Parts?
