JBL 4430 rehab

I yam a slut for bass. Thinking some 4435s may deliver it too ... But that will have to wait until we move into our new house.
I'm starting to have second thoughts about building the 4435's, I don't have space for them. It would be better for me to build a second pair of 4430's, quad set up baby! :thmbsp:

Ah, you caught my post before the edit; I thought maybe it'd be better not to dilute your thread with porn of the "other model." 
Anyway, yeah, they are freaking huge. The house we're moving into has only a medium-sized living room, maybe the size of the room shown above, but my wife says she's cool with them, so I'll have to see how this works out.
The funny thing is, our friend who's selling us the house has a pair of L112s in there now; he's a retired dentist and bought the JBLs new long ago; he says I'm the only person he knows who appreciates them!

I think the serials are in the 4200xx range.

The caps on the diaphragms have rubber discs glued inside and they fall apart and get all nasty. I peeled mine out and replaced them with felt discs. I also replaced my Ti diaphragms with Radian ALs and I think they sound better, but that might be psychological. Either way, I dig them.
After I finish getting these cabinet holes finished, and looking as good as I can get them, I'll bring them in to my main system to really get an ear full. So far they have reminded me why I have always liked two way speakers, they have such a good soundstage, and balance. I also have always felt that these woofers carry the best midrange I have ever heard from a 15 incher.
When I compare them to the L-220's, I know that I will probably prefer the warmer, more colored sound of the L-220's. It is probably because of the room acoustics more than anything though, plaster walls, and mostly hard flooring is to blame.
I know that the L-220's require serious wattage to sound their best, so the 30 watt tube receiver probably will not be the best choice to use for the comparison. It should be another fun time trying to decide which I like best, but all I know is that I'm really glad to own another pair of cheeks. :thmbsp:

I'm not sure Eric, I doubt I would ever find another pair of L-220's in such great condition. I purchased these from their original owner, he was happy that they were going to be enjoyed, and well taken care of. I could hook them as a quad with the 4430's and see how I like it.

After working on the cabinets, and putting in the spare woofers, I thought the 4430's needed some main system time. My Fraziers dwarf the JBL's, but they do that to every speaker I bring next to them.
Now I can really enjoy these, and start to compare them with my other heavy hitters. I will start the refoam of the original woofers by the weekend, ahhhh, so glad they are here! :thmbsp:
