Actually, an auction is a quick and easy way to find market value. My experience is that stereo gear goes for less, maybe as little as half the prevailing e-bay prices. If you get something cheaper than that, chances are you purchased from an uninformed seller.
I would define insane e-bay value as the atypical result of a bidding war, like the L100s that went for over $1200 not too long ago. That was an amount that really stood out from the other sales around the same time period.
A look at completed auctions reveals a range between $400 and about $800, with more at the $400 end of things, so an average is probably around $475. If I were wanting a pair and paid $200 or less locally, I would consider it a bargain, especially knowing that if I had sold them on e-bay last week I'd have gotten at least $400.

I just posted a pair on CL today for 400, but not in your neck of the woods. I don't expect to receive 400 but I just turned down an offer for 300. Somewhere in between, I guess, would work.
I have not listened to them in a while (6 months) so I hooked them up yesterday and am listening right now, nice speakers
250 is a real good price and if you are patient you can find that - or may be even less. It could take some time to stumble on such a deal and some repair might be required. In my case I had to have a tweeter re-coned (85) and had to replace a LF driver (75 - which I was happy with at the time). JBL components and service are expensive - so a complete and working L100 pair has some value.
If you are concerned about price then you have to be patient, but you will eventually be successful.
P.S. Just received an offer for $400 and this is the first day - so at least for my geographic area 400 seems to be close to market price.

The average for completed eBay auctions for a pair in the same physical and working condition IS the current fair market value.
Generally speaking, anything for sale on CL will go for a lower price than on eBay, because the number of potential buyers is a tiny fraction of the potential buyers that will see an eBay auction.
Going price on eBay for a decent, working pair in average condition is usually in the $400-$500 range. Pristine, flawless examples can go double that.

Yes I did..4 of them for 100 dollars. They must of had a quad setup. But granted that was 4-5 years ago.
