That's from the good old days when you could ID the better JBL's by their use of the same quality drivers as the pro studio monitors. Those drivers are the good ones, almost identical to the ones in the 4412a. Not bad at that price.
I have a pair of these that I use with my turntable and Sansui 9090. You're right, they are about as pretty a speaker in person as I've seen. And they sound very nice as well. Good lows and clear highs. I'm not the most discriminating listener and perhaps have a tin ear but they sound really good to me. I got mine for $100.00 and had to refoam the woofers. The woofers weigh a ton and are kind of hard to wrangle around getting them back in the cabinet. Just my .02 cents.
That's a decent price for the L100T. These speakers had the mighty 2214H woofer, which has a HUGE magnet and it's capable of some serious air movement. These are a bargain right now as they don't command the prices of their earlier brethren, nor suffer from the quality demise of their later siblings.
