JBL L100 vs Yamaha NS-1000M

About NS-1000M bass response. Have never owned (but have listened to) JBL L100. OK, have been wanting to write this numerous times, flame me for it- the amateurish comment deserves it, but I will refund the airfare home from Japan of anyone who can honest claim that these NS-1000M do not shake the room at loud volume. Perhaps 'loud' is the key word here. Maybe it's an abnormal combination of ancillaries, room, speaker stands and room treatments (I suspect the bass traps' configuration make a significant contribution).
Almost everyone can relate to the DSTOM heartbeat at the beginning of side 1: the floor is vibrating, windows are rattling... can feel the heartbeat from the recording pounding in the chest.
I don't disagree with the general consensus that the bass response can be anaemic in many settings. But give them a chance and they'll give great bass performance.
Yep.

Yamaha NS-1000M - Price $ 500 in Japan
JBL L100 - Price U.S. $ 500
Shipping from Japan, $ 1,000
Shipping from U.S.A. $ 1,000

Total cost me $ 1500 Yamaha
JBL is also cost in 1500 dollars.

Neither one is worth that much money, regardless of where you are!

And . . . where are you?

And . . . what are you trying to accomplish? Do you just want some iconic vintage stuff or do you want the best sound for the money?

Well I for one have seen many items sell for more that what I think they are worth, but I guess someone thinks they are worth it or they wouldn't have spent so much money on items. But I suppose their are a lot of places in the world were getting good speakers cost more than locations where their are an abundance of them.

I think I agree with you to some degree here but I think I might describe it a little differently. My NS-1000X essentially had very little output under 55hz or so. If I placed them against a wall or close to a corner, it would boost the bass enough to make some happy, but at the expense of overall balance and general performance. The bass, where it does extend is very high quality bass and in my system with multiple subs, they performed very adequately. Very good speakers, in fact. Where I can't agree is the idea that without subwoofer support that the bass is adeqate or realistic down deep but that's a subjective preference on my part. I like speakers that dip down into the low 30s minimum. My mains without subwoofers will play down into the high 30s and I wouldn't live with them without subwoofers.

JBL paper mid and tweeter are not in the same ballpark as the Beryllium domes found in the NS-1000. True, the ported L-100 will produce more rolling bass for rock and roll but it is not accurate. If the price is the same, the NS-1000 is a no brainer. IMO.

While I wouldn't compare the JBL drivers to the Yamahas, there are paper cone mids that can compete with the Yamaha mids. In fact, the 250TI's seem to outperform the Yamaha's from top to bottom in the head to head testing I've done. I may be a heretic, but I don't buy into the beryllium marketing as being superior to other materials by default because of the material.

Considering shipping is going to be brutal no matter what, 1500.00 seems very reasonable for the quality of the NS-1000.

Had both speakers in good shape--Yamahas were right for me and my type of music: pop, vocals, soft jazz, piano and guitar. 100 had more bass but Yamahas have more speed, accuracy resulting in very nice guitar-piano-percussion. Works well with tube or SS in excess of 75-100 watts. If you like rock or loud music the 100s will do. Ron

Perceivably overpriced as all JBLs seem to be as whole vintage group, in this case the NS-1000s are a steal.

I've heard that some people have paid 1000 Euros for NS-1000Ms. Plus shipping. :smoke:

I've heard people pay over $12k USD for Thiel systems, but I still think they don't sound as good as a JBL L7.
What does price really tell us? We don't even know what music the OP listens to or what equipment he has. :dunno:

Yamaha C-4 + Yamaha B-4

It would be pretty crazy to pay the $1000 for shipping for the L-100's. Getting the yamahas for $1500 seems too much to me also, yet if you were to get one the yamaha's would be the one to go for. The JBL's just are not worth that kind of money.

1st time

never heard the Yamahas but i have a pair of century L 100,s and its an awesome speaker, the tweeter almost sounds like a ribbon !
iam trying to figure out how to put a post up on this site, because i need to ask about what woofers would be good to replace in a set of Daulquist dq 12's , i cant figure out how to post !!???

I have had both set of speakers that you mentioned. I found out the bass on the Yamaha depended a lot on the amp I was powering it with. The JBL has a lot of bass with any amp. The Yamaha's sounded much better with a Realistic 100 WPC than they did on Carver amps. Also the JBL's do not need a lot of power. I liked both but sold them and moved on.

I noticed that the NS-1000M are different versions, in Europe they have a grill and grills on the speakers, in Japan, just grating on the speakers and there is no landing pits for The setup grill. Just do not who do not know how - to determine the year Yamaha NS -1000 M? The serial number or is there other ways? Why do some pairs of bass speakers looks bright and some black? Why is the rear panel is bright, and sometimes it is black? Here the dark http://injapan.ru/auction/n109667836.html

The original NS1000M came bare with no cabinet grill, just the metal grills for the drivers. Later, when the speaker became more popular for home use, Yamaha started to sell them with a large cabinet foam grill. You could buy the grill separately. You just had to drill holes in the cabinets and plug in the grill receptacles into the holes. It was quite easy, because I did them myself as well. The first generation had lighter drivers and a plain particle board finish on the back. Later, the backs were painted black and the woofers were a darker gray. If I remember correctly, the back of my speakers was finished as well like the fronts but i can't really remember.

Thank you! Grills I do not need, just wanted to know more about them :)
