Then there is the efficiency/sensitivity of the woofers that can be a much bigger factor than the (nominal) impedance itself. I do not know the specs, but let's imagine a scenario where the original woofers have a much higher sensitivity and therefore would be producing a much higher output with the same input level.

At any given level in the above scenario, the original driver would have much higher output than the new woofer relative to the other drivers.
I see. I was reading that most listening is done at 1 watt or less, what is the need really for 120 watts available? I mean say the sensitivity is 93db 1w 1m, how many watts are needed to reach the 120db hearing damage level?

Most listening is done at very low wattage. Nevertheless, if one type woofer has four times the sensitivity of another for example, can you imagine the difference in perceived output in those covered frequencies there would be at that 1 watt (or 10 or 100) input level?

Greater wattage is most helpful in providing unclipped, uncompressed, or undistorted peaks in the music.
 
p.s.: I wonder what the sensitivity is of the woofers that are in your cabinet now relative to the original JBL woofers.

I have seen him 3 times in the 70s-90s with his own band, and once again playing with John McLaughlin. Mind boggling.

1 watt = 93 dB, 2 watts = 96 db, 4 watts = 99 db. You need to double the wattage for each 3 db of volume. 512 watts = 120 db at 1 meter.

Thank you. I think I would blow the top off my house before I used the full potential of my new amps... Not actually, but it'd be loud.
 
You should post a picture. The waveforms are very cool.

Here you go. The super ribbon was replaced with a dome but after corps pounding with John Otvos (designer) he said the super tweets were a moot point. I do have replacements I purchased just in case I get adventurous and want the original drivers. The cabs need to be refinished but with my knee injury I'm off heavy lifting ect for awhile. Very good sounding speakers and in my top three favorite I've owned.

 
The things a person is looking for always come up at the most in-opportune times. Happens to me a lot.....
Opportune may be a while, $500+ for a nonessential possession is pretty hard to justify. They sound awesome even with the current woofers/sub's they came with.
