JBL S99 Lancer 99

tubino

A guy with too many tubes
I just got a pair of these, and am liking them so far. I think they use an LE14A woofer and LE20 tweeter (judging by what I found in a manual from JBL on the web).

Anyone have experience with these? Pictures below.

Here's the label from the back. I have only heard these hooked up to a Marantz 2215 and a tiny 6AQ5 SE amp with no feedback. I think a good PP tube amp or better is the way to hear these. Will try with a VAC EL-34 amp and report back.

I am a fan of the LE14 but I just don't like JBL dome tweeters. With that said those are nice speakers. I have had a couple of pairs and I think you will like them.

As you said try them with a decent power PP amp and let us know what you think.

Oh yeah did ya get the funky grills that came on those. Both pairs I got didn't. Those are Worth more then a few bucks if you were wondering.

Grumpy

Grills included

Yup, they came with the original grills in good shape.

Was wondering something else. I passed on a pair of Sansui S-1117 speakers in excellent condition with original boxes (!).

Guy wanted $100. It wasn't the price, I just don't have a need for them anywhere. Might be fine party units for the basement, but I'd still rather have what I've got: giant Jensen backloaded horns. Party on!

Oops. I missed them. And check out this part: original owner, who had never moved them, and with the original boxes in pristine condition. They looked as though they were made yesterday. Ah well. I have nowhere to put them.

Back to the topic of this thread.

I pulled out a rebuilt PP 6BQ5 console amp and hooked it up to JBL S99's, and used a Dyna PAS preamp (because it was handy, because I wanted to check it out before listing it for sale...), and yeah, the JBL's are pretty nice. I didn't care much for the tweeters, but the rest sounded good. I wonder how crappy the crossover is... seemed a tad hollow in the mids, but that could have been the amplification or source.
