JVC QL-?? owners thread

I have a QL-5. Picked it up for $10 at a garage sale! I have a Shure M97 on it. It's a very nice turntable.
 
Here is one link to repairing the tone arm. It's rather long but there are some pictures in there. You will need a 1.5mm allen wrench cut short to sneak under the collar where the rear stub attaches. Two screws secure the stub. Some folks use a common facet washer to make the repair.
My tonearm droops some but isn't causing a problem. Looks like it's easy to fix. Just not a priority.

I have a QL-A2 which has been sitting out for a bit while I'm trying out a Technics SL5300. My QL A2 is not pretty and the 5300 is, and also full auto. I thought the 5300 sounded pretty good with my Stanton 881S cart on it but yesterday I decided to put the JVC back into the main system and holy crap does it sound fine, so far over the years I like it better than my Pioneer PL630, Dual 510, and the 5300. I don't know why my lowly A2 sounds so good but it sure does with the 881S on it.
 
I’m very happy with my QL-A7. Note that the arm is a bit different than the QL-7 so I was unable to take it apart for “droop” repair (as described in the previously linked page) and had to resort to using silicone.

I’d like to hear if anyone has remotely mounted the transformer and power supply, and also if anyone has upgraded the voltage regulator. These are popular mods with the SL-1200 crowd and I don’t see why they couldn’t work here as well.

SO, something that is a little bit of a bummer though with the QL-Y44F, is that being a japanese-only model, there's no english manual :idea:

One thing i'd like to know at some point is : what is the effective mass of tonearm :idea: so I can know what compliance of carts I can use.Wonder if my Nagaoka MP-200 is a good fit on it?

Also wondering what the hole in the tonearm base do. VTA adjustment? or just some port used for maintenance?

F_B can you remove the platter and turn the table upside down, remove bottom cover and see what it does? It may be some sort of VTA adjustment but I'd want to look at whats under there first before I tweaked it.
My QL-A7 has VTA adjustment but it's just a lock screw on the pillar, it's not on the fly. About my only complaint with that arm.

Look at the QL-Y3F manual, slightly different tonearm but in the same spot it's called the "stylus lead in adjustment".
Looking at the specs at the end of the QL-Y44F, although written in Japanese, the spec numbers are in English and they don't include the effective mass of the tonearm. Not sure where you can find that.
I love the little cartoon characters in the Japanese QL-Y44F manual, we don't get them in the English manuals.

On my QL A2 that was an adjustment screw for the tone arm lift height. At one point at the end of a record my arm wasn't coming up high enough soon enough and there would be a terrible ZIIIIIP as the stylus was dragging across the record on its way back to its rest. A small adjustment and it was as good as new.

Now the last bit of info I'm trying to find is : what exatcly are those ''nut''-looking thing that are on each side of tonearm mount?
Is it a piece that allows ajustment of some sort? or it's just used for mounting the bearing and is locked into place and can't be adjusted?

The round things with the screw in the center? Don't mess with them, they are the adjustments for setting the pivot bearing. The only time you need to adjust them is if there is play or binding when moving the tonearm up and down. It should move smoothly with no perceptible play.

Proud owner of two QL-Y55f's - sadly now sitting in boxes. The electronic arm is what makes those tables. I would SOOOO love to put that arm and electronics on a metal body Technics!

I'll try the Nagaoka MP-200 and the AT-3600L soon and let you guys know if the VTA seems alright for those two carts on that table.

If you view the image or manual in Google on your phone or upload the image and use their translate function. It'll recognize the characters and live translate them into English.
