Edit: With just the elbows, WT2 impedance measurements confirm I was tuned to 40.26 Hz. I put the extensions back on, OAL = ~8.5", measured through the centerline of the elbow. They are aimed upward, along side the compression driver magnet, with ~1/8" clearance. This minimizes any midrange leakage through the ports. Tuning measures 34.99 Hz.

BB6P says F6 is 36.05 Hz, 24 Hz or 0.8 octave lower than stock.

All done with it now.... :yes:

I ran into a couple of problems: The 60 ohm resistor at C2 is not a production item, so I substituted two 30 ohms in series. Not sure how that will fit on the PCB's that are available, but it shouldn't be too tough. I'll find out when my order arrives and I actually start assembly. :D

The 3.5 mH iron-core coil at L2 is on backorder at both PE and Madisound. I don't know a lot of suppliers, but I guess there must be some around. A pricey option at PE is THIS COIL. Impressive specs, though.

Also, if you're looking for high precision in the crossover, you could upgrade the caps to the 1% types for a few dollars more. Also, the bypass cap at C3 can be upgraded at PE to a type specifically made for bypass.

The prices were all pulled today, so they're real. If anyone finds an error, sing out!

Erse (www.erseaudio.com, also the mfg of the PE coil you linked) has a 3.6, 16ga I-core for $12 and change and an 18ga I-core for $7.52. They're an AK sponsor too.

Don't know if they have stock, but a pair of 3.6mH plus a pair of 1.5mH for the standard E'Wave crossover will get you over their $25 minimum. They are in Marion, OH, as I recall.

They also list a 62-Ohm, 10W wirewound resistor. I don't see them calling it non-inductive, though. I believe Wayne has suggested that would not be audible.

Yes, two 30-Ohm in series will get the requisite 60 Ohms. They can either be stacked or stood up as a triangle.

I hadn't noticed the Dayton bypass caps. I may try a set of those and see if I can hear any difference. Film and foil is better, generally, and the price premium seems insubstantial.

No doubt many members will question whether these or any similar thrift store fare warrant a $200 upgrade. I have an answer, but won't risk posting it here. Suffice it to say that "Dorking around" would be prominently featured.... ;)

Good, I'm pretty sure I checked all the part number and linkies. Was more concerned about leaving out something crucial.

Way ahead of you on the back panel. I've been wanting to switch to banana plugs for a better contact, anyway. Got nothing against folks who use zip cord; got nothing against folks who insist on inch-thick solid copper busbars. But I do pay attention to the actual connectors. Got some 1/4" fiberboard left over from making new front grille boards on my other set of KLH-17's, the pair I'm not converting, so I'll likely use that, following the Bauhausler's example.

Also, I don't trust those insulating washers. A couple of users chimed in on the PE site that they melted pretty easily while soldering was going on. Not good. Give me a non-conductive substrate every time.

It looks like at about 50 Hz the impedance of 2 in parallel would be about 3.5 Ohms.

Gordon has previously recommended these woofers, as well as the 12" version, as playing competent bass singly in appropriately sized and tuned vented alignments.

Remember that 4435 uses 2234H woofers paired, 3 dB more sensitive than 2235H as employed in 4430.

I'd have to look back to see what woofers Gordon used in his Seeburgs, but I believe if I were experimenting with LF augmentation via 0.5, I'd be wanting to work with drivers more efficient than DCs to determine if this approach to increasing overall system sensitivity with extended LF response is workable.... :yes:

Edit: Gordon used dual 15" JBL M115 musical instrument speakers. His 0.5 inductors are 17.5 mH.... :thmbsp:

There is a Yahoo group for soundeasy users. Lots of great information there. I don't recall the name right off the top of my head but it shouldn't be hard to find. John K. put together a tutorial that really helps with just diving in too.

Haste Makes Waste

I'm going to have the above saying etched into the middle of my bifocals.

I was in a hurry the other day to get everything ordered for this conversion, so I went ahead and called up the expensive version of the iron-core coil. I had acquired Jacklab PCBs and figured I was set to go. Well, I also got a mask of the first Ewave PCB, which was 4x6" and I remember Jack telling me with pride about how he had shrunk it to 3x6. Sure enough, the boards I got were 3x6. Also got the mask for the Indignia XO, which is somewhat different and also 3x6. I had already ordered and received 3x6 blanks for the Indignias.

Anyway, guess what? A 3.5mH coil is bigger than a 1.5! By a bunch! :yikes: Whodathunk it? See photo below.

So, here I sit, having put in YAPO (yet another parts order) with our good buddies at PE for a brace of 4x6 sensitized PCBs. Oh well, lots of other stuff to do to get ready. I was just SO looking forward to doing the solderwerke this weekend.

That High-Q inductor will certainly work, and will easily mount external to the board. Alternatively, PE has a VERY liberal return policy. They'll even refund if its us that screwed up.

I'm not sure how big the I-Core 3.5s are, even, but you'll likely be able to fit them on your 4x6 boards when they both come in.
 
Ah, now that I've got it, I'll roll with the punch. Thought about side-by-side mounting, but decided I'd like to keep it all together. Heh, it's sure gonna be one heavy board with that baby on it! Anyway, I'm just pissin' and moanin' because I can't start on it right away. Anyway, I've cut the waveguide mounting holes & am just cleaning up the cabs. Taking the Bauhausler's advice and putting in T-nuts for speaker mounting.

It will take me an extra day or two, as I will be making my very first attempt at etching my own PCB's. Have Jack's instruction thread printed out & taped to the wall for easy reference.

I stripped the stock KLH-17 crossovers, left the aluminum plate, ran the driver leads out one of the holes, and duct-taped the others.

You'll be listening to them in about an hour or so.... :D
