I was sitting here wondering what model KLH speakers is considered the best? What do you think? Are the KLH 17's worth collecting?:yes:

I wouldn't attempt to acquire multiple pairs of 17s, but you should definitely get one pair. I'm getting ready to recap my 17s any day now.

I also have a pair of Model 5s that I really enjoy. Oh yeah, and a pair of 24s, too. Try and collect one pair of each model! :yes:

I was _very_ suprised at the quality of the KLH Model 5s. I picked up a pair for US$5 each at a yard sale last year just for fun. Rebuilt the crossovers and redoped the cloth surrounds but have yet to replace the foam gaskets.

They have a similar presentation to the Quad ESL63s but do take more power to get them going. By presentation, I mean that the stereo image appears to be coming from behind the speakers but is full, wide and stable at most all listening levels.

The Model 5 is a 3-way, with 2 5" midrange speakers in addition to the woofer and tweeter of the Model 6, I believe. These are the same 5" speakers from the KLH table radio that was so popular, too.

It's my understanding that the Model 5 (& 23) woofers, while physically interchangeable and cosmetically the same, have a larger magnet structure and a heavier cone than the Model 6 woofer.

I've got a pair of 23's that I like a lot.
Right now they are on my list of "keepers" as I try to pare down my speaker collection.

Can't comment on any others as I haven't heard them.

I have had a stack of 23's that i really liked. I have a stack of 17's not and they sound great as well. KLH's like to be stacked.

i moved from AR 2a and 2ax's over to 6's.

Listening to a "New" pair of 20's now....

...Not what I would call a detailed or revealing speaker, but very musical and non-fatiguing...$12 at the thrifts with a blown tweeter kindly provided gratis from crusaire....:thmbsp: At 4 ohms, definitely eats power....

I have a pair of klh12's that I like very much. I've restored them back to original condition except for the modern caps. They have an external adjustable crossover that's a neat item to fool with. I believe the 12's were klh's best offering in 68-69.

I have two sets, Sixes and Seventeens, both recapped, sealed, etc.

Both are fine sounding speakers, esp. the Sixes.

Tube friendly to boot!

KLH 1 with KLH tweeter array
KLH 5

In that order is my vote.

I just picked up a pair of 33's that sound nice, however the tweeters are not the originals and I would very much like to identify these old tweeters, they sound better than the originals, IMO!

Funny that the Sixes have only been mentioned once here.

Seems the Sixes and the Seventeens are the more frequently mentioned/popular, or at least were.

Henry Kloss did an updated version of these- the Model 17 and Model 6, for Cambridge Soundworks.

Excellent modern-day bargain speakers.

I have KLH Research Ten SCX-3A, I am not sure if they are collectable but I like them.
