KLH Twenty Three Restoration-PICS

This time though, I have a donor cabinet to pull veneer off of. This is HUGE. It's darned near impossible to do this type of veneer repair if you don't have any slices of veneer to do it with.

Hell yeah! I want these done! Got sidelined this weekend with the cave rearrangement for the 910's. Thought I'd be oiling the Twenty Threes by now!

Grab those Twenty Threes! Those will impress you big time! Keep in mind most likely a re-cap and woofer surround re-seal is in order and a BIG SH#T eating grin will be on your face!

I have a donor KLH cabinet as well, which I'd like to pull some veneer from to do a few little repairs on other KLHs. How is this best accomplished?

This is a very inspiring thread on cabinet restoration. I have restored cabinets, but not as in the condition as your 23's, (with very good results). Now I feel I should, and can tackle something more daunting.

Am slated to go over and test them, peruse them tomorrow at 1pm. He sent me a poor image of them, kinda on the rougher side. If they're too good to pass up, of course I'll get all 4. At least I'll get 2 though!

Also, does anyone know what the power handling capabilities of the 23s are, if that was ever officially stated? Yesterday I picked up a Luxman R-1120 (120WPC @ 8 ohms) and swapped it in in place of a HK 330c (30WPC) that I was using previously. I'd also listened to them on a Yamaha CR-640 (40WPC.)

Holy. Crap.

While I thought that my Wharfedale W70Ds were better speakers than the KLHs, I'm starting to think that the KLHs just needed More Power because they are less efficient. You'd think that at low listening levels it shouldn't matter, but somehow either the Luxman is just better all around or else that headroom makes a difference even at modest volumes.

I'm really, really hesitant to try the Luxman on the Wharfedales though because an insensitive individual could probably send voice coils across the room with a twist of a knob...

But anyway, I'm going to say that at least at reasonable volumes, the 23s really do come alive when you feed them some beans.

And Glenn, as I've said before, nice job on your speakers. I cheated and just bought some cosmetically nice ones, although I've yet to really make them shine (all other speakers have gotten a thorough cleaning and oiling...)

I say grab all 4 of them Big's since you have plenty of room after your son removed his drums and you need another project or two. :lmao:

Yeah, been looking around the garage looking for a project. Dug around while, just couldn't come up with anything.

Thanks jcamero!

Seeing pics tells the story, and shows it's pretty easy. Just need to have some old veneer on hand, an xacto with #11 blades, and a straight edge for cutting. Go slow, make multiple passes with the knife for clean cuts.

If it inspires anyone to tackle a project they had doubts about, then that's what it's all about. You'll feel great with the end result!

I can testify to Glenn and Doctorold's most excellent skills. They're the ones that were able to guide me through my first projects here on AK. Of course, I had to put my own spin on a few angles. But without them, the results I am able to produce would be of a far lesser level.

Been doing the typical over-reading here on AK about the Model 23's and they are really loved and revered here. While this is of course, a great thing. For me, not so much. I'll probably be dragging home the 4 23's.

Why not so much? If it's the cost factor, you could sell one pair after they are all spiffied up and recoup your costs, though, hearing all four together may change that thought real quick! I know my Six's stacked is quite an experience, four Twenty Threes could only be better!

Why not so much? Because I already have enough speaker projects to last me another few years! I've got more pairs of projects in my storage area than I've posted about here. You guys only get the highlights.

I'm not really good about selling anything to recoup my previous expenditures, not good at all. But I'm going to have to learn that too, my storage area is finite.

Decisions, decisions.

Hear ya on the space and project list!

Well, at least go see and hear them. Keep in mind the caps were crap, so some of them might not have working tweeters. Luckily, my tweeters worked, but I still swapped pot the caps, one per speaker.

You are to kind Big's, but I thank you. It only takes tools, patience, and practice. I encourage other AK members to make an effort to do such work as displayed in this thread by Glenn, he should be commended for his efforts, great documentation and photographs, well done Glenn. :thmbsp:
