Klipschorn "cornerhorns"

Hello!

I have an opportunity to pick up a pair of 1985 Klipschorns, along with Phase Linear 400 II, phase Linear preamp II, 3-dbx range expanded/compressor, and a few other pieces, for $5k

Worth it?

It depends on what the other items are, but by what you listed, it seems overpriced to me. At least around my part of the world old Khorns tend to sell in $1000-$1500 range, but pop up every now and again around $800, and sometimes even less. The PL 400's are plentiful around here and regularly sell for as little as $200.

Man, I wish I could find PL 400s for that cheap around here.... Even better would be 700/700b/700 II

I'm in the market for Phase Linear gear, btw. If you know of any, or someone selling, I'd be interested.

A quick look at my local Craigslist and I found a 400 with wooden case for a $500 asking price. They really do pop up here regularly for less. I don't see the higher models very often though, but if they are going for a lot more where you are, it might be worth checking out the Seattle Portland area for deals and see if you can get them to ship them to you.

We're in the same area, if you're patient, I'm sure you can piece all that together for less. Phase Linear was local, and there are tons of them floating around here. But if you want all of it right now, it may be worth it to you to make a deal with that guy. Those later PL pieces do go for a bit more, it's mostly the older ones that pop up here for cheap.

4K sounds more reasonable with the age of the Phase Linear equipment. There's been a set of Khorns on CL here for 6 months for 4K and he can't sell them as they are priced too high.

I wouldn't have any thing Phase linear if my life depended on it. You are just asking for trouble. If you are into analog recordings such as LP's, cassettes and R2R tape a 3 BX is a worth while investment and is why I keep mine. It improves FM broadcasts, too. Just remember a little bit goes a long way. Just make sure the K-horns have the original drivers and the crossovers are in good shape. Considering new ones cost $15,000 and the cabinet work and fit and finish aren't as good as the 85 models if they are in pristine shape.

The 5K price sounds a bit high, but what condition? I wouldn't place any added value on the phase linear...unless you would just like them. The phase linear electronics are probably not a good match with the Khorns. I would guess 3k -3.5k if the Khorns are in very good condition and in walnut or some other premium wood. if they are birch I would say 2K.

Way back in 69 I drove 800 miles to compare a pair of Grands driven by 3500's versus Cornerhorns driven by a 275. The Grands won hands down with only 35 watts perchannel. Since then I have tri amped the speakers and added Celestion super tweeters. The Grands and Low boy Symphonies now make up my HT system which was completed in 2008. I have since updated the HT processor and addedd a Blue ray player. The stereo system was finihed this year add two MC 830 amps, a MQ 107 EQ and two XRT 28 line arrays. Those 28's are real winners. 100 watts is all I need per channel. About 4 watts for Klipsch horns. But then the 28's reach an octave lower, a full octave.

Those Concert Grands are nice. I just wonder with the corner horns being such a problem with having the right room and corner placement...are we talking apples and oranges? I have K-horns at 16 foot on corners and the bass is shall I say "earth shaking"/
Just wondering...
