Klipschorn "cornerhorns"

Grands have a tendency to have a hump in the bass at 150 hz when placed against a wall. But if you pull them away from the wall the bass below 40 hz drops off. It takes abourt 4 db of boost to get the grands flat to 23 hz before they quit +0/-3 db. and there is a peak around 6 to 7 db centered on 150 hz. My grands are 12 ft apart center to center and I sit 16 ft back. Klipschorns below 400 Hz tend to wander all over the place depending on the room and your seating location. The reason I chose Grands was clarity because of the line array with out the honk of that 400 hz horn . Yes the Corner horns had more highs above 12 KHz, and I could have change to the Z tweeters by Bozak removing my Y tweeters, but I added Celestion 2000 tweeters and tri amp instead. Both the Cornerhorns and Grands bass transient response is poor with tube amps which was all we pretty much had in the middle 60's, but by bi-amping and then triamping the performance of the Grands really improved. But they do not compare to the XRT 28's for sure. Thats what has happened over the past 40 years between 1969 and 2010. I heard new Forte, and hersey and a couple a weeks ago and really like the new midrange sound. Wonder when Klipsch is going to up date the Cornerhorn midhorn?

I am certainly nowhere in the know nor privy to anything official. That said, I seem to recall Roy (Delgado) stating once that they will probably keep the Heritage series pretty close to 'as designed by PWK'. I think one of the questions to him was why not yank out the K401 and put in something like the K510 (or other).

It is admirable when you talk to Roy and sense his love, affection and respect for PWK....you can tell it's genuine. I'd personally fall into the camp that it might be a bit of a mistake to not bring the Khorn into the 20th century.... but I'm guessing right now they're only going to improve it at the margins.

If someone wants the "improved Khorn" then they should simply bypass it and look at the Jubilee which seems to finally be emerging as a residential frendly speaker (other than size) with residential friendly finishes (verses the industrial black). The good news is, and bluntly, there's no politically correct way to say this, but the Jubilee simply puts the Khorn, as good as it is, into the back seat. Pretty much whoops up on it irrespective of how you slice the pie.

With the top of a klipchorn being a totally separate piece now they can make it taller and install a more modern horn. Then too with more modern magnets and diaphragms and better throat design they could make a Klipschorn return to being a two way like in the very beginning. But more important than that is designing or implementing more advanced woofer designs similar to what Mcintosh developed and are being used by JBL and Magico, too. But it will take stiffening of the bass cabinet to reduce stray vibrations which could easily double the price of the speaker. Klipsch owners would all cry and protest. But at $30,000 a pair that still a small fraction of the price of Wilson, Magico, JBL, Mcintosh, and other top of the line speaker systems. Imagine a Klipsch horn with less that 2 % distortion putting out 114 db with only 10 watts input. Everyone else would be pushing 200 watts or more to get the same levels with their speakers. Yes maybe a JBL could do it with 80 watts, but that still a big difference.

I would have expected you to know this.... (perhaps you do) so I'll say it for others who may or may not know.

Go to the Klipsch forum and do some reading around about the Jubilee. It is coming out as a RESIDENTIAL speaker for their 75th anniversary. As I understand, once those "100" (or whatever number they're going to produce) are done, the Jubilee will continue as a RESIDENTIAL version.

Keep in mind, THIS is what PWK's original goals were....to have the Khorn revert back to a 2-way speaker. They created the Jubilee and the company shelved it for residential use..... but it has stayed in the closet long enough and it would seem the time is neigh and it's happening.

The bass bin has been modified from the original Jubilee bass bin. Original had two 12" drivers, new version has single 12" driver and the other location (where the 2nd driver originally was) is now ported/vented into the horn throat. Having never heard it, I understand it goes deeper than the original Jubilee and Roy has tweaked the driver for the HF horn giving the speaker a more complete range verses the Khorn (and original Jubilee??).

So there's no they "could" make a Khorn return to being a 2-way.... they are producing them for release this summer as I understand. It's just a matter of how wide does the wallet need to open?

I should have clarified above....the first 100 (I think) Jubilee's will be produced as a limited edition 75th Anniversary edition and after those are gone, the residential version should be available but not as the 75th Anniversary.

I would still Choose a Klipschorn over a Jubilee. Looks being the main factor. I don't want a PA speaker in my House and that is what it looks like.

I gotta jump in. I'm gonna say where I live, I've only once seen a pair of Khorns in central iowa on CL. And I've been watching CL for at decade (although no alerts set).
Lets just call it right now - someone show me a set of khorns in Iowa for sale right now. At any price.
IMO, Iowa doesn't have nearly the variety of the gear that I see on west\east coasts. There is some good gear, no doubt, but a set of khorns at $4K? Not around here.

There's someone in your neck of the woods who might sell his Cornwall IV pair.

As i mentioned in another thread about the speaker market, it's astounding and incredible that a speaker designed in the 1940s can still be considered a viable solution for some number of listeners. A 72 year old speaker competing with whatever today's best speaker designers can come up with! A couple years ago i bought another age old speaker - Bose 901- and was shocked at how fun they sounded.

I looked thru the thread, didn't see that. But not interested anyway, thanks for the link tho.

Probably because he doesn't say they're for sale, but he kind of inferred it when he noted he was willing to use them as trade bait (see below). Anyway, at least you have another fellow audiophile in the neighborhood with nice speakers to boot!!

Looking for a couple different models, Center Channel being the hardest to find.... I live in Iowa City, IA but willing to travel ..... Have a set of Cornwall 4’s in black ash I’d be willing to trade. Floor standing, bookshelf, center.....

I have had my 4k KHorns for about a month now and having been in audio for 50+ years these speakers for the design and SQ are about the most enticing i.have heard.
Granted the room setup can either make or break them...but what speaker is a slam dunk on.room setup.
Between a 2 way or 3 way, i.would prefer a 3 way. The portrayal of the female voice on my.k horns is stunning
They are 16 feet a part which I think is perfect. Glad I was able to purchase them local as they are rare in my area as there has never been a local dealer.

Judging by the huge speakers and the pictures displayed in your bedroom, you must not be married or have a special spouse!

They look like fine furniture in there.

For anyone hunting Klipsch in that 5-state area, I'd suggest to keep an eye on Mpls CL, too. The metro area is like a sort of cosmic concentrator for speakers. I lived in the city 20+ and khorns seemed to pop-up once a year or 1.5 average, maybe. Cornwalls almost never...once every 7, and LS only slightly more frequently. Think I only ever saw one pair of Belles...maybe 2...ever. FWIW.
