Lava Lamps

Looking for my first Lava Lamp - looking for vintage and USA made verses Chinese if I can - at least that was what I was advised to do.

Found this one - gold with black wax - does the fact that there are many little pieces of wax mean anything "bad" about this lamp? Or is that normal?

Thanks!

....or I found this one....a little newer / they can't tell me where it was made
....and there doesn't seem to be as many, if any, little pieces of wax

Thoughts??

I kinda dig the black goo... Depends on what color the liquid is. A light gold or yellow liquid (water?) would be cool.

I'd bet someone moved the lamp when the goo was hot, and got some little bubbles separated off the larger mass of goo. They should coalesce into the larger blob when everything cools off if I remember the 70's. (And if you remember the 70's, you weren't there...)

Don't get the black one, unless you like how it looks with the fragments. The wax won't restore itself. It's a sign that may get worse, too.

^^^The lamps are real nice, but your set up is serious. What do we have there besides the AR LST speakers? I see what looks like (at least) four Carver amps...^^^

I've got two lava lamps. One works well, the other, not so much.

You might try a lower wattage bulb in that one.

I have one that did that once it had been on for a while and got thinking and found the bulb was replaced previously with a 60 watt and it should have been a 40 watt.

I don't recall reading anywhere in this thread about "identifying" true vintage lava lamps.

Not that it may matter, but for me, my stereo is ALL 70's, so why not the lamp.

In any case, I have a friend who has collected about a dozen or so from a local thrift store he used to work at. I do recall seeing the lamps with the "Lava-lite" logo on them, and then there were those that did not have the logo.

Most of them though, had the Lava Lite logo on the bottle cap.

Any other tips?

Soooo, I'm watching a TV show last night, that I finding is mildly addicting, called Pawn Stars. For those of you that know the show...the crew thinks Rick has a lot of pent up anger in him and needs to chill so Chum Lee comes in Rick's office and plops down a Lava Lamp right on his desk, plugs it in and tells him he needs to watch it because it will make him mellow. This, of course, only makes him more angry because he doesn't think he's angry in the first place and the drama unfolds.

I thought it was pretty funny. Lots of Lava Lamp fans here, any Pawn Star fans?

:D Reminds me of when they brought in donuts and they ended making bets on which donut he would eat. When he walked in the room, he could tell something was up, so he refused to eat one.

The whole episode you could tell he wanted one, but he is such a stubborn fella that he didn't want to let them see him eat one.:thmbsp:
