Lava Lamps

Ooooh! If you don't love these, you should learn how to!!! Then there's the lave lamp plus glowing tubes, which is another dimension even cooler than just lava lamps!!!

I got one at a yard sale this spring but it's lame. It takes a good hour to get going and them after an hour or two all the lava just stays on top. Hotter bulb maybe? It says no more than 40 watts which is what's in it.

They do take forever to heat up, just the way it is. the reason all your lava is sitting at the top is because it's running too hot.

Or the density of the water is too high. You can adjust that a little bit by taking something out and replacing it with DI water.
Is it at least breaking up into at some time into smaller bubbles and than starts to float at the top? If it never breaks up is a drop of dish washer rinse aid to reduce the surface tension of the filling. Not much or you have just little bubbles

I agree with teal'c that the lamp is running too hot. Maybe try to find a 35 watt bulb instead of the stock 40, or use a dimmer.

Non-Lava branded lamps (Cheap versions) don't seem to work as well. The classic lava lamp shape is a trademark of the Lava brand, so most other styles are knock offs.

Lava lamps!

^^^Love 'em all! Bob, what is that nestled between the 2 lava lamps? A baby guitar amp and perhaps a Technics linear tracking turntable??^^ Love the Strat.

Thanks VG good eye! That is system two in the background that is forever changing. The little amp is a Fender Eric Clapton Vibro Champ with a '91 American Standard Strat and you guessed it a Technics SL10. I'll get some better quality close up lava lamp photos here soon.
