Personally I'd stick with what the factory used as replacement capacitors, my thing is if a cap shorts or goes out of tolerance enough to cause a secondary issue it's going to get expensive. I've done a good number of recaps and always stick with the factory spec'd be it Nichicon Matsushita as I agree with keeping the original sound & spirit. My last one was my TEAC A-4010S. All Nichicon caps and I had to replace all the signal transistors, two were leaky so I took a shotgun approach and went with matched lots to keep things consistent.

There's a list of bad transistors here on audiokarma that I'd recommend checking yours against, those double package jobs were not just limited to Pioneer in the late 70s.

Followed your advise, checked the transistor list from JVC JA-S77 service manual and just found 2SC458 is listed as "bad transistor", apparently that's the only one and it has 3 of them on circuit, so I'll order those 3 when I order some more stuff from mouser, and I'll consider replacing/recapping.. it sounds fantastic already, can't believe how good... I'm in love with it.

2SC458's are the worst! The common replacement is 2SC1845. Do make sure you get authentic quality transistors.

I was thinking about going with 2sc2240, but yeah maybe I end up with ksc1845, although I was checking Ic is 100mA on the 2sc458 and 50mA on the ksc1845, while 2sc2240 matches.. but yeah apparently there are so many counterfeits on the net, and I was not thinking about spending 99$+ to get free shipping on mouser... =(

I just ordered 10 from Italy on eBay… it has 13.000 (99,95% 5 stars) positive sales .. so I hope they are legitimate! Finger crossed .. can’t believe there is such fake market behind a simple chip transistor…. My gosh

And checking DigiKey (I always used mouser), noticed something good which is 50€ orders to get free shipping overseas, while Mouser is 99€, so my next big order will be on DigiKey probably! Thank you! long time didn't open DigiKey's website.

Seeing you are in Spain: I often order from Conrad and sometimes Reichelt. Those are both German retailers. Here in The Netherlands that is about as near as it gets for such shops. Perhaps there is something similar in Spain actually, I wouldn't know.

I got this last year, one channel kind of working but fairly clean and cheap. Some butcher had been in there left the STK partially solder the cooked resistor and eventually found a couple of bad resistors. The thing was a challenge for my up and coming abilities. But it works fine now, is clean the way I like them and the actual total cost was like 50.00

Thanks, yeah that thing was destroyed. My str6 had some scorched 1w ones but nothing like that.

I think I'll do it soon =) .... question is..... why isn't everybody (on vintage subworld) talking about JVC , they don't have accurate ears, or what? I mean, couldn't be the best?... I could understand it... but... it's one of the best brands on that era with this "own signature" sound which is AWESOME... come on...

Wait until you hear their seperates, been using an M-L10 in my main system for 7 years, and two M-3030's in my surround set up. Would love to hear a pair of the M-7070 monoblocks, but they seem to be rare even in Japan.

They're beautiful, although I've never heard them in real life, probably a ja-S91 (integrated amp) would sound pretty much as good as those M-L10 and M-3030 depending on which preamp you plugin to... Lovely pieces of equipment, absolutely.
