Let's talk Altec speakers / please share your experience and impressions

Yes they will. The Pro version of the L-300’s
Squared off Cabinets instead of the Classic
L300 shape. Had both but not side by side
for a/b comparisons.
Btw. Prepare to pay up for a really nice pair!
Probably close to Double of a pair of the more efficient 604’s with decent cabinets.
They are a different Flavor so try to listen to
Both

I don't have anything to add about the model 19s having no prior experience with them.

But I purchased a pair of used 604-8Gs in good condition and built XOs based on a Markwart design.

A friend built the cabinets which ended up being about 10 Cubic Ft. They will make plenty of music and bass with 15 watts!!

I have switched back to a 10 X 12 listening space. The listening position is about 8 Ft, from the speakers.

This is fine for lower to Mid level listening. I have the space to slide them back another couple of feet and do so when I crank them up.

Here is a link to a thread I started, receiving some great input from others here.

Good Luck with your quest

Anyone have experience with JBL 4333a's powered by tube amps? I read some comments about the 4333a being a bit smoother sounding than the L300. Do they use the same components?

Technically yes
Identical Xovers N333
L300 Woofers 136a or H later Ceramic mags
4333 use 2231a. Same speaker different labels
300 tweets 077. 4333 -2105 same
300 mids Le85. 4333 -2420 same
The slanted front L300 Cabinet
makes a difference

How do the L300 / 4333a compare to the older designs like C50 / C60?
Mostly more advanced Xovers. And the better slot Tweeters
The C50’s and 60’s were cabinets with different components available. Nice wood Veneer Cabinets are rarer

Oh yeah and most importantly the L300- 4333’s use a longer mid Horn to go down to800 cps better to meet the Woofers.

When you live in the land of "fruits and nuts" these come up quite often. This pair is in Sandy Ego and is a bit overpriced for the local market.

Personally, the 43** box and the L200 and L300 boxes sound a bit different and I prefer the home versions' box sound.

Yeah pretty Nice
Certainly Rarer on the East Coast.
I’m sure there’s way less Walnut 4333’ survivors than L300’s
Both solid investments. To be passed on to the next Audiophile

Again, living in the land of "fruits and nuts" this pair of 4691Bs is from the professional Caberet series. These have the same 2425 horn driver as used on 4430/4435s. The woofer is an E140 that would be used with a bass guitar. Add a sub and refine the crossovers and you got one nice speaker system with slam that you just won't get from the foam edged woofers (2231/2235).

Oh, note that they only want $300 (or first offer) for the pair.

I think the L-300 is inferior to the Altec 19. I think the JBL lacks life and has a thick, hazy characteristic. Less than the sum of its parts.

I agree that there is a "dullness" in the upper vocal range of the JBL horns that bugs the hell out of me, and certainly there is some tubbiness associated with the 2235 woofers. Some deny it, but we know its there..., or not.

To me Joni Mitchell is extremely revealing of this. Eq can take care of it pretty much.

The Altec is more lively in this area, but the 604 has an inherent "glare" that can be pretty much removed with eq. The Altec has more "slam" than the JBL. And, of course the Altec 604s was "out image" the JBLs, that actually image rather poorly. (Even the 4430s out image the L300s.)

Also, compared to the "Ethyl Mermans" the L200/300s lack "microdynamics." I can listen to the reverb of the hall and when it is totally inaudible on the L300s, I can switch over to the Ethyl Mermans (set at the same volume) and still hear it for a bit. I don't know how the Altecs compare because I can't do this comparison with them.

It should be known that recording studios used eq on their monitors both in playback and production.

I’ve had 604Es in 15 cu ft cabinets... loved them but couldn’t justify the size to my wife. Sold them about a month ago. I’ve played with many Altec components. My favorite is the Valencia style. I’ve never owned a pair of 19s, but I don’t know that I’d trade Valencia’s for them. Altec rules!

Mine are 15.5 cu ft (exterior) and my wife didn't really want them in the house. They are 2" taller than her. C'est la vie!

I think I need to step into this L300 vs 19’s
Discussion. Ever wonder why the L300’s go for more $ than the 19’s?
Imho the only thing that the 19’s do better is play Louder! With tons of mid bass
The 19’s on their best day Ringing Horn and all good can never go lower
Than the L300’s foam edge 15’s do
Yes I agree that the L300’s do have a slight lower middle deficit. Some what adjustable with the L pads. But the highs are much better. Btw
Jbl corrected that with the 4343’s. They were supposed to be the New (L-400’s) but Harmon intl Killed them
Yes I do agree that the 4430’s do image
Better . A superior horn and Xover
Had to chime in here

I have a pair 604E they stand in a room that is (3.5mx5.5m) 12'x17' where I have them however I have no big boxes to have them in but it will be soon. The first thing I changed was the XO to a Werner Jagusch Crossovers that was so much better than the original. About what effect you can have on your amplifier 15W are more an enough I use about 5 Watts at normal listening I am never above 82dB at the listening position this is less an 1 W, I listen to very varied music from rock to classical mostly jazz or electronic music the speakers may not go as deep in bass but if I should be honest so I do not miss it they are so damn good at reproducing music that makes me forget.

I've never heard 19s and would love to, but I'm s'danged happy with my Vals it really doesn't matter. And yes, Altec rules!

My point of reference.

Ethyl Mermans (JBL 2241H, JBL 2251J, Heil AMT with diffusion lens, custom crossovers with Audyn caps and core air core inductors) on the left and the L200/300s (AlNiCo 2235, AlNiCo 2420 with original tangential diaphragms on spray rubber-coated, long (11") L300 horn/lens, AlNiCo 2405, custom crossovers with Solen caps, Theta by-pass caps, and air core inductors, cabinets raised and interior volume increased, ports lengthened and internally flared):

I love the job that you did on your L200’s
I started my Jbl Rabbit hole journey with them!
Would love to hear them some day
I had the L300’ and 19’s together for 2 years
Used to do shoot outs all the time with over 40 different amps 9 out of 10 friends and others choose the Jbl’s. Imho the 19’s were just too hard on the ears.
